Why do cops carry guns, but never use them?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why do cops carry guns, but never use them?

Honestly, I watch cops often, and they never use their gun, If the criminal gets shot, I will have a big smile on my face, but that hasn't happened yet, why?

I want to hear the criminal screaming, if they do, I will laugh so hard.

LOL

"Why do you wear a seatbelt if you've never had a car accident?"

also, compassion much?

I hope the age indication under your avatar is correct as that would fully explain your position. Cops are trained in the escalation of use of force, and the gun is the LAST resort. It is the exercise of extreme discipline and MATURITY to subdue criminals without having to use deadly force.

Occaisionally police offices need to protect themselves or other people.

The use of a gun is a last resort, so it should be a rare occasion that a police officer needs to use a gun agaiinst a suspect.

The guns are mainly for self-defense. Most criminals don't directly threaten police. I'm not a cop, so I can't tell you any other situation (besides self-defense or defense of a victim) when an Officer would use his or her gun, mayber there are some. But I think what you see in the movies is overly dramatic. The reason we have police is to make us safe, and if they were using their weapons for no good reason (or shooting criminals as they try to get away), people would be less safe.

And by the way, the less cops have to use guns the better. Yesterday there was a terrible incident in Philadelphia, one officer was left dead and another in the hospital (they did get the criminal and he won't be hurting anyone else ever again, but the cost of losing an officer was way too high).

I love the good ol' U.S.A.!!

Yes they use their guns. You watch cops, you really think they are going to show someone getting shot on TV. They can only use their gun if a person is threat to them and they have a weapon.

They use them when they feel they are in danger or someone els is in danger. The show cops was riding out with Fort Worth TX a few years ago and the police got involved with a shooting but the Chief refused to let them air that part.

Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell are two of the more noteworthy cases that establish that cops do use their guns, and can let things pretty much stream into 50-round affairs.

Here's an idea, get arrested, violently resist, and charge the cops yelling "gun, gun!!" at the top of your lungs. I'd be shocked if nobody fired at that point. Better yet, bring a friend with you - makes ure your friend does nothing suspicious (the friend doesn;t even have to be identifiably linked to you, just as long as he/she is close enough to get some of the 9mm or 40 cal. action that you've been looking for.

they carry guns but don't use them much because they want the criminal to be scared of them and surrender

but yes it would be funny if they got shot

Oh but they do use them.

Riverside, CA: On December 28, 1998, Tyisha Miller, a 19 year-old black woman, was fatally shot and killed by three white and one hispanic police officers. Early Monday morning, Tyisha Miller was in her car waiting for relatives to come help her change a flat tire. When the relatives arrived at the Riverside gas station shortly after 2 a.m., the two cousins were unable to wake Miller in her locked car and called 911. Officers responding to the call found the white Nissan Sentra locked and the engine running. According to The Associated Press, police said Miller was unconscious and foaming at the mouth, presumably as the result of an epileptic seizure, and appeared to be unconscious. Officers then saw a handgun in Miller’s lap, which according to later police reports, belonged to a friend, and was inoperative. Relatives said she probably had the gun to scare off would-be muggers because it was late at night and in a dangerous part of town. The officers decided that paramedics would not be allowed on the scene until Miller’s gun was retrieved. Police attempted to rouse Miller by ‘‘screaming and hollering’’ and pushing and banging on the car. Police say Miller reached for the gun and that was when they opened fire.

They carry guns in case they are required to use them in extreme situations. Every police officer is trained on the weapon and how to use it. If they are in a situation where their life feels threatened, or the lives of the citizens they protect are threatened then they have the ability to discharge their weapon to protect themselves and the citizens around them.

Not all police officer's carry a firearm. There are plenty of college campuses, and university's that do not allow their police officers to carry guns.

To answer your question they do use them, that is why they give them taser guns in case of an accidental killing of someone. And dude! i really don't think that someone getting shot is funny because it's not.

Black Whiteツ
They only use them for an emergency.

They do use them but only in extreme cases like if a perp was using a weapon on them first. It is not a "shoot first and ask questions later" kind of thing. The criminals unfortunately have certain rights and if violated makes for a mistrial and a release back out on the streets.
