Why do most cops work security at other jobs??

is that not a conflict of interest!!! Do you have to get the OK from the Chief!!!

The Boss
Depends on the departmental rules, with the low pay of most departments it is almost mandatory to work a second job. One area which should be forbidden in working as bouncers at bars. But even in this corruption prone area some departments permit it.

my bro in law was a policeman, and he worked security at friday and staurday nights in bingo halls! what a policeperson does on their own time is NOT a conflict of interest

It's similar to freelancing. No, it's not a conflict of interest. It's the same job pretty much - maintaining order and upholding the law...

Kevy
Nope. Not all officers are hired Full-time and need a way to supplement their income.

Steph
most cops work security for extra money on days they are off duty. i know a lot of law enforcement officers that work security but they do have to make sure there will not be a conflict of interest. usually there is not one though.

Cops work security jobs because they're paid so little they can't afford to take care of their families on what they make from just one job.

some have to get approval but it is not a conflict. we have them cause we dont get paid enough

California Street Cop
Its all arranged through the PD and the union. Some PDs do not pay overtime and the officers need it to supplement their income.

In no way is it a conflict of interest.

Adel
Why is it a conflict of interest? It's a good way to make money during their spare time off from their main job.

it is not a conflict of interest.they have to work second jobs to supplement their low pay.they have to fill out cards stating when and where they want to work. it then will bee approved by a supervisor.i worked a second job my entire career.it takes one hell of a spouse to raise the family cause you are seldom home.if i did not work the second jobs then my family would not have as much.my wife did a great job raising our kids.every day i worked i thought about my family.a officer is nothing without his spouse

Boink
In the UK any extra employment has to be approved by the Police Service. In addition, some types of employment are expressively prohibited, such as owning a licensed premises and (I believe) holding a Security Industry Association (SIA) License (necessary for security jobs). The reasoning behind this is, exactly as you say, to prevent a conflict of interest. With security positions, police officers would be off-duty whilst working in a job that could likely require them to use their powers. That could lead to some expensive claims for overtime...

They do that work off the clock, paid for by the company they are at. It's over-time for them.
