Why do people come on here and bad mouth the police?
|
Its a simple question to which i know i am i am going to get daft answers from simple people!!
To those of you who fit the above criteria why not put pen to paper and complain to the people who write the laws i.e your M.P ? The police as a rule are members of the general public who decided that instead of moaning about crime they would get off the butts and try and do something about it.
Like i said as a rule most are decent i admit there are some out there that are not, but do not tar everyone with the same brush.
If you are so anti police please remember NOT to ring 999 when you need them then you won't have to deal with the people you hate so much. Additional Details To just add the reason the police don't always turn up on time is due to the fact that they are seriously understaffed. This is another reason people should complain to their M.P's and not on here or to the poor officer who everyday hears the same complaint.
They know that they are turning up late and they know that not having enough staff is not the answer people want to hear but unless labour hands out more money so that the numbers can be doubled then the public will be stuck with a very below par service.
Oh and to the person who thinks we feather our own nests i have been in the force for 4 years and am still keen today as the day i joined (despite the put downs i get).
I am not in the job to 'feather my nest' i joined cos after being burgled and assaulted i decided i wanted to help others like me.

I think the majority of police officers do an amazing job - certainly not one that I would like to do! Have never had to call them (in this country) but thank God that they are only a phone call away. |

By and large police do a difficult job very well..
I would not like to do it myself.
However there will always be bad apples ..... not many.... the ones with attitude problems who should never have got in the job in the first place. These few give the whole force a bad reputation quickly latched on to by the brain dead yobs and all the other dregs of humanity |

It isnt the police them selves that I think most people have a problem with it is the system itself when it works every thing is great for everybody but when it doesn't lawyers (try being one of them for a week)always sigh and say it is just the system.and Police officers being the public in the public get hated on because of the system of laws that they represent that sometimes cracks down on minor offenders and lets murders and rapist off on a technicality.Plus there are dirty cops who commit more crimes against the law then your average crook does and gets away with it because he can hide under a badge. So naturally a few people with this power abuse it but the other cops who know full well about the bad cop in their midst don't investigate and turn this in.They consider it a matter for internal affairs. I am not saying cops have to be model citizens but I don't think a cop should ever get away with breaking the law right under the nose of other cops just because he is one of their bothers in blue or whatever I would go on about this for another page but I am about to run out of room. |

i don't think they do as most brits have respect for our police but when they say they phone when they need the police and they don't turn up or the next day that puts the police on the wrong foot |

the police take to long to go to a call when you want a police officer you can not find one they are all in the fish and chip shop and harassing children for nothing |

I totally agree with the asker but then I would as I'm in the job!
I do however thank all of those who are showing support and can actually see the problems we face on a daily basis. Respect goes to you all. Inevitably though, there are the silly answers. I was particularly amused at Mr K Marx iii's comments and would like to add my take on his 'Rules'.
1 The police should stick to arresting criminals and not harassing people going about their business.
Define harassment, I bet I can define it better than you as I actually know the definition in law and the defence to it. Look it up. I regularly arrest 'real' criminals, it's my job.
2 The police should understand that they are not psychic and therefore "crime prevention" in most cases is just utter c**p. That is to say you would not recognise a person who is about to commit a crime just by looking at them in the street.
I beg to differ. Lots of the people I've arrested were about to commit a crime. Crime prevention is a lot about knowledge of the techniques of the criminal. If they are pointed out to people, they can aid in preventing crime.
3 The job of checking motoring credentials should be left to those riding motorcycles or "Traffic cops" and not any spotty faced bored kid in uniform throwing their weight around.
Cops are cops, no matter what department we work in. As for the 'spotty face kid', the age is irrelevant. Lots of my more experienced colleagues are younger than me. Ability counts more than age.
4 They should organise to be able to respond quickly to emergency calls because that is the REAL job and not treat it as if people are wasting their time because they are stopping cars and issuing tickets somewhere.
Come and join us and you'll see how hard it is to respond to emergencies when you're on your own policing a whole city. That's happened to me more than a few times.
5. They should be respectful to the public because we pay their wages.
Not heard that one before! I also pay tax so I pay my own wages. Do you contribute to your own income?
As for respect, that's something that's earned, not given freely. Respect me and I'll respect you. I'm a human being under the uniform.
6 Cut down on mass convergence on football grounds and silly music festivals and leave that to private security people. Just oversee it with a few officers.
Football hooligans = Higher necessary Police presence. You never see the Police at a Rugby game in my city.
Music festivals = lots of crime that needs to be dealt with.
Security guards have very limited powers in law.
7 Answer the phone at the nick within 3 rings as we do in the private sector.
Can't do that if we're out fighting crime.
8 sell the silly horses as they make poo everywhere.
Not worth a comment really.
9 Cut helicopter flying time to a max of 15 mins as it is too noisy and we can't sleep.
I'll remember that the next time I call them in to help me look for a 'real criminal'.
Who made these 'rules'?........ |

Perhaps is because some of us have had VERY BAD experiences with the so-called police, eh? Where I come from, we had to deal with RUC for years - and what brutes that lot was - can't say that PSNI is much better.
BTW, we didn't and wouldn't call them. They would show up to cause us trouble. |

The reason people gripe about the police is because they've usually had bad experiences. USUALLY those experiences are their own doing, like speeding or illegal parking. However, cops ARE only human, and sometimes they get grumpy instead of being courteous, that could also effect someone's views. But all in all, it's better to have police out there protecting everyone (even if that means pulling you over so you don't endanger others) than NO police and complete anarchy. |

I'll happily challenge our local MP on how sh*te our local police force is on response times.
Thanks for the tip!
Edit, PS, You know what really annoys me though. The law is coming down hard on mobile phone use while driving which I agree with completely. How is it OK for a police officer on his way to work be talking behind me on his mobile phone next to his ear while driving and it's not for the rest of us?
I've got the utmost respect for anyone that does a vital role well, police officer, fire fighter, doctor etc.. I don't agree with "bad mouthing" the force just because you have been caught out. So are you telling me the police that have often failed me due to lack of evidence, poor response times or traveller families being "untouchable" in our community is OK? That this should be acceptable and PC Plod should still be respected like the good old days when nobody sees results? Who is responsible for the police taking two months deciding whether to arrest someone or not? The police force? Or a higher authority?
I think it's very noble of you defending the police especially if you see it as bad youths "bad mouthing" here.
What about people who have lost faith in the police force and don't see the need to call them even in an emergency these days? Knowing it will take them too long or someone has to get seriously hurt or killed for anyone to do anything about it! |

What a fab question !
I also work for the police . When the afore mentioned ring 999 they get the same dedicated care and attention as everyone else and I dont think for one minute they stop and think about the person taking the call or the person that appears at thier door to help them in times of need and the danger we place ourselves in.
Simple answer some people dont realise that we do care ....we are here because we love our jobs and we do have hearts and sometimes we even go home and have restless nights worrying about that call we took today or that person we visited today.
It takes a caring honest loyal and hardworking person to do the jobs we do and some people will just never see it.
Well done for what you do and keep up the hard work I appreciate what you do :) Thank you
Be safe out there. |

after serving 27yrs in the police force and now retired(thank god)i have watched as one government after another (with vested interests in their biggest contributors to party funds..ie legal and medical professions)have reduced police powers to a mere nothing .we have this week seen the PC hierachy complaining about policemen being allowed to ask people for their id at 2am if they refused they used to be arrested until they did tell us who they were and where they were going and we were satisfied as to their intent...the "sus" laws as they were called have been deemed to be taboo...now we stop someone and they tell us they are called mickey mouse and we send them on their way saying have a good night with minnie then...checks on the Stop" persons forms which police now have to fill in show that 80% give false details make the law a bigger "***"than it ever was before ,police are no longer a deterrent as villains are now untouchables to a large extent and police powers reduced to Zero, villains have human rights ,,victims none at all...the numbers of police allocated to a force has barely changed since figures were introduced around 1900....ie north yorkshire force covers a huge land area, little population so it gets a small number of police officers,,,west yorkshire is a smaller area but a much larger population and so is allocated more officers.
i have every sympathy with anyone who has just joined the police but the one consolation is that when the lunatics in parliament realise the errors of their ways the wheel will eventually turn full circle and they will realise what a lawless society they have created..best of luck in your difficult job.. |

the phone number for the police is 911 not 999 anyway most people on here who bad mouth the police don't like them because they interrupt there illegal drug activity or any other illegal actions they should be in jail for . |

Missdiddy, I agree with everything you say. Most coppers are decent down to earth people who want nothing more than to do there bit and make a difference. The vast majority of the public are well behind the police.
Yes things could be much better. In my opinion the government are to blame for the current position of the UK police (understaffed and buried in red tape).
The majority of people who do compain are our 'customers' and of course people who have recieved poor service. I'm not too blinkered to realise that some cops don't deserve to wear the uniform (a minority I'm sure).
Ian UK - Well said and 'TOP ANSWER' in my view. |

If the police were smart they would just sit back and do nothing. Then society could only blame its own members for all the misery we have. But, if they get involved, they take the blame. |

Good point.
However, the fact the Police are now so tied up in red tape and human rights and seem to get away with stuff we don't (see today's papers regarding speeding), has helped to generate a them and us scenario.
Also, having spent some time (3 years) in the police myself, I know they are no different to us ( as you agree ).
And will try to feather their own nests as we do.

I don't think people actually hate the police as such but are offended when the police think they have powers that they really do not have.
