Why do people do senseless acts of vandalism?

Some people are angry and release that anger or angst with vandalism and get a rush of power, or it makes them feel dominant over something. It's all psychological reasons. People act out in certain ways, and vandalism is just one of many.

Tagging, or graffiti, is not senseless by definition because it is done as a territorial reason. When someone keys a car, it is for envious/jealous reasons. Throwing a rock at a window, breaking bottles, kicking or punching holes in a wall, knocking over trash cans, etc,. These are examples of senseless vandalism, because there is no apparent reason or benefit other than feeling powerful or dominant.

because they get away with it, last week some thugs smashed my window and even though i know who did it the police wont do anything, because there were a few of them who all have each other as alibies! doesnt matter that im scared to sleep at night and no longer feel safe in my own home or that my 3 year old was scared senseless. i dont know whats wrong with todays society, make me ashamed to call myself british, its a society full of yobs

Usually because they are senseless.

We hear from do-gooders that these poor people are bored. My opinion is that they are not taught respect for people or property. There is no discipline in schools and in many homes. When I was younger we didn't misbehave because we knew it was wrong to do so. We also knew what would happen if we did misbehave and our parents or a teacher caught us in the act.

I think vandals are some of the worst criminals. Defacing someone's property with spray paint, to me, is an offense that deserves a Singapore butt spanking, with flesh hanging off the muscles. People put a lot of hard earned money into making cities and counties look nice. It's not about making the vandals pay with cash, because they can't, it's about showing them what happens when you 'rape' someone's property and violate them. It costs little people their hard earned money when these wonton vandals desecrate private or public property.
