People go to jail when they have been convicted of a crime and have been sentenced for one year or less. Or they are awaiting trial

They go to prison when they have been convicted of a crime and sentenced for more than a year.

They usually are drunk while driving, and have a DWI, and so they do jail time. Sometimes, they are working at Wal Mart, and get caught stealing on the job, and end up in jail. There are endless reasons. The two most common reasons are drunk driving, and stealing at Wal Mart. They end up in jail because the did not obey the law.
