Why do people get sentenced to a year and a day?

Why not just a year?

Because a year and a day is the maximum amount of time you can sit in the county jail in some jurisdictions, anything longer than that and you go to a state prison.

It is cheaper to house someone in a local jail than it is a state prison.

a year and a day, gets you PRISON not jail, a year or less is always in the county jail

i guess they count the day you were in court.
