Why do people ignore the police warnings to not drive when it's been snowing?

Seriously, you are not indispensible - I'm sure the office will live without you for the day. Additional Details italienne: don't know where you live, but here we can't be fired provided we can cite police warning.
MICHAEL B: nope, not a school teacher - I'm sane, for a start.

Two reasons
1. Depends on the work. I've worked factory jobs in the past. The factory ran 24 hours a day, most days of the year, snow or not. If you miss a day of work during the snow, you either have to burn a personal day or not get paid. That can be hard for some people.
2. Simply they think they are a good driver and can handle the snow. |

Surprisingly, many employers don't allow for absence due to hazardous weather. My daughter worked for a law firm for awhile -- the lawyers, being well paid, could afford to live a few minutes from downtown, whereas the rest of the office staff had 10-25 miles commutes...but the lawyers' stated policy was "if we can make it to the office, everyone can."
Unreasonable? Yes. Dangerous? Yes. But when you need your job, you don't have much choice. |

Not sure why others ignore the Police. However, I would ignore warnings such as this because the police have no right to keep me in my home. They already have too many "powers" as it is. It's getting to their head, and they need to be put in check.
They say it's to protect you from your self just like every other right they take away. The constitution forbids this kind of control.
He who is to sacrifice liberty for safety gets neither... |

What is your point? People drive in the snow all the time.
What do the police have to do with it? If you can't drive in the snow stay out from behind the wheel. |

Many people resent the idea of authority telling them that they are not allowed to be mobile for a given time. Much the same as senior drivers who are no longer reasonably capable on the road, the idea of being told one cannot drive themselves after obtaining a driver's license is difficult to accept.
Basically, it comes down to "You aren't telling ME when I can and can't drive!" |

In my state, people who drive 4x4s think they're invincible during snowstorms |

You must be a school teacher trying to justify that you close the schools at the first sign of snow. |

Because they can be fired. If the state wants to pay for the lost pay, or make a law that says you can't be fired if you heed warnings, more power to them. |

sometimes I also go faster than the posted speed limit, and have been known to park in the 15 min zone at the library and take 17 min. |

I believe "some" people think nothing bad can happen to them. |

Because people don't like to be told what to do & that is especially true when it comes to their freedom to go where they want to, when they want to. |

1. they dont care
2. they have an emergency
3. they think the police is trying to scare them
4. they think it is a good idea
5. they like to do the opposite what police have to say
6. they want to test their driving skills
7. they ran out of beer
8. need to get gas, they think their will be less people
9. they dont feel like making dinner, they go for the take out.
10. oil change
11. go somewhere that i dont know of |

Maybe you should take names, and turn them in to your teacher or principal?
You may be able to get out early for recess. |

If the roads are closed for severe weather, I stay home. No open roads means my job can't be done ... I rent cars for a living. No roads, no check ins, no rentals ... no reason to go to the office.
Inclement weather warning? Roads are still open, but runways will probably close. Stranded travelers! People who MUST be somewhere else, and must be there by the next morning!
I am the only person on my shift that can rent them a car from my company, if I choose to not come in a replacement worker from the nearest agency (60 miles away) must drive down to cover the shift. I live just 25 miles away. Should I stay home and force another person to drive twice the distance I would have gone? Somebody will be at the counter every day the roads are open, it's just a matter of who, and how far they will drive to get there.
I own a 4 wheel drive truck, a little piece of insurance I bought after getting the job. I can get almost anywhere ... at 25 miles per hour in 4 wheel drive (if the roads are that nasty). I don't overdrive my abilities or my vehicle. I am not one of those "60 miles per hour in zero visibility with a foot of snow on the road" 4 wheel drive owners. I am simply a man who must get to work every day the roads are open, and I must do so safely. |

It's called a "winter driving advisory"...We as police officers CANNOT tell you when or where you cannot drive (with certain exceptions). It is used as a warning to drivers that bad weather is causing bad road conditions. The part that aggravates me is when the roads are icy and snow packed and you still get people who think "more snow means more traction", and that's when we get all of the accidents.. |
