Why do people say cops should be out stopping crime than giving tickets?

This is more of a statement, I know why people say stupid things: ignorance. But I don't understand the logic. They say:
"Cops should be out catching rapists and murderers, not giving out speeding tickets and making money for the city!"
I remember one cop saying this to me and he told the guy in response: "There's a murder happening right now? Someone's getting raped? Where? I'll arrest them if I know where they are!"
F.Y.I.: traffic stops are the #1 cause of felony arrests! Additional Details the statement is in " "s

Most people are in denial that a cop who stops them IS stopping crime. Our society is becoming more and more anti-authority. People don't even know what their rights are, but the second you try to stop them from doing something, they are sure it is their constitutional right.
Here's a traffic stop story for you. It comes from my husband who has been an officer for 13 years:
One night a fellow cop that he worked with attempted to pull a man over for the minor offense of a busted headlight. The car didn't stop and a police chase was soon underway. They chased the man for quite awhile before being ordered to give up the chase (his department had recently received harsh criticism for a chase that ended badly). The next day they found the car abandoned. It turns out the vehicle was stolen. Also, there was a body of a woman who had been beaten, raped, and strangled in the trunk. The autopsy concluded that she was alive at the time of the chase and forensic evidence showed that she was in the trunk the entire time.
Traffic stops do catch criminals of the worst kind and there is a reason the police need to pursue fleeing cars. |

I always reply. "You're right sir, I should be out catching murderers and rapists and robbers....but that sounds dangerous...so I will stay here and finish this ticket for you." |

I'm not sure why people say that because if they weren't breaking a traffic law, they wouldn't be getting a ticket - so... I think the police ARE attempting to stop crime. Just because they're mad about the ticket, doesnt mean they don't deserve it. |

Police persons don't get the respect they deserve. I, for one, don't mind the police giving speeding tickets. A speeder could wind up killing somebody in an accident. When I have been stopped by the police, they have always been very polite and professional, and I try to be polite to them. They have one of the most difficult and stressful jobs there is. |

I agree, a great deal of criminals are caught through traffic violations. Not to mention, breaking the law, is breaking the law no matter what the offense. |

because giving tickets is stopping crime, i know when i speed and a cop pulls me over i don't bother him because i know that he's just doing his job.. i'll fight the ticket in court!!! but i'm not going bust his chops because i was speeding. its there job tickets and arresting s.b.'s is their job. thanks guys |

We live in a world of no fault so any way to push blame to something else is the way most people go. Usually those who make such statments are guilty of the ticket etc. and try to make it the cops fault somehow. If they aren't 'out stopping crime' they are the ones to blame for an ignorant motorists mistake. Our society doesn't realize the importance of these tickets - it's for our own darn safety!! |

I like your point. I wish cities around the world would take SOME focus off revenue raising and channel more resources into other areas. I dont know about other countries but Australia is screaming out for people to choose police work as their profession - we just dont have enough. |

Typical response from sheeple who can't accept responsiblility for their own actions. Do more people get murdered and raped every year or die in car wrecks? No cop I ever knew got into Law Enforcement so he/she could write traffic tickets. It is an unpleasant aspect of most patrol jobs. Everybody wants to catch wife beaters, child molesters, and rapists. I don't add murderers because afterall some killing is praiseworthy. |

I have family in the law enforcement, and I hear all kinda of crazy stuff. People dont realize there are different divisions with law enforcment, some do traffic, some to drug bust, some to office work and so on. 60% of pepole getting a ticket usually have a warrant out for them.
It's always the criminals that have a problrm with officers, go figure! |

I agree that that is important, but here (edmonton, alberta), the cops will outright refuse to do anything about any broken laws, for example, a hit and run with witnesses where the make of vehicle and liscence plate were gotten, they just write it up and won't even look for the person... a friend was raped by the man she babysat for, they told her to go home, just don't tell anybody...The chief of police, his son and daughter (also cops) were recently discovered to be in a massive conspiracy that screwed over pretty much the whole city and made them rich... and they drive homeless people to other parts of the city and dump them off, just for laughs etc., etc. The cops here are worse than useless, because they cost us money! . |

people should be slowed down.that's important
they catch a lot of people doing other things who or breaking traffic laws.this neighbour boy was run over & killed by a speeder, two of my dogs were killed by speeders.
I am glad they give me tickets if i break the law. i thank them for doing their job,I will not tell them where i am going as it is not any of there buisness,I am an american southerner who has rights ,they will NOT search MY car .they will not disrespect me.I am NOT a criminal .i am a man. |

I don't feel the traps are necassary and a waste of money...especially when we have a murder a day here in Baltimore. I would rather they focus on the larger crimes and leave traffic as a lower priority. We all know it is for the revenue and are sick of it. |

Yeah, that is pretty stupid for people to criticize police officers for not catching someone they can't find. But I also dislike the fact that police officers are paid to wait in alleys and speed traps, and just try to find as many people committing minor crimes as possible.
When they do something like that, they stop being police officers and become vultures. |
