They're gonna check anyway so why do they ask? Just curious.

Basically to see if you are lying to them. B/c if you lie about that, they have reason to believe you have been lying about eveything thing else.

Just like why to cop ask "can i search you car" when you have every right to say no, but they still say yes.

It is a good test of truthfulness.

You would be surprised how many say no and then come back with a long criminal history.

Gorbachov said Trust but verify. When you get suspects talking, you never know what interesting crimes will be revealed. All you have to do is sit and listen.
