Why do citizens feel they can do whatever they want? If you do not want to get my attention, then don't break the law.
Police are subject to the exact same laws as every single citizen. The only exception is we are allowed, by law, to break some traffic statutes in the performance of our duties.
Go do a ride-along. See our side for once.
I treat every single person I encounter with respect, but I also have a plan to kill them if necessary. I am nice until the time comes to not be nice.
Take a look at yourself. When you are pulled over, do you immediately start out with a bad attitude towards the officer? Do you start with the "Why the F--k did you stop me" attitiude?
People say things to me that would probably get them punched in the nose by someone else on the street. But I am supposed to take it because it is part of my job? Well, I usually do, to a point.
If you really dislike the police so much, then don't bother calling when some thug with a gun is trying t break into your house. But of course, no matter how you curse me out and hate me, if you do call I will get there as fast as I can and will do everything I can to protect you, even if it means dying. That is my job and it is the life I have chosen. |

i think there is a mentality that goes along with the job that some officers are just not able to avoid developing. i also have seen some of this mentality in some educators. anytime you have a power over people, not just a supervisory position but a power to be what you would call over and above society, this attitude can develop. in the educational field, adults are over children and don't deal with fellow adults. in the law enforcement field, some of this is the same. we are the police officer's children, if you will, that they are to keep in line. it is all about attitude. |

I guess if you stay away from trouble, you have nothing to worry about.
It's never effected me. |

Because they CAN! I hate people on power trips. |

very vague generalization. |

Because they do not have to answer to anyone except their own departments' internal affairs. Plus, in a court of law, it is always your word against the officers.
Our country likes to pretend that you are innocent until proven guilty but it always seems like you are having to prove your innocense when you receive a traffic ticket...
The officer's job is to get you into the court room because even if you get the case dismissed, you will most likely have to pay some kind of court fee/administrative fee of a nominal amount that day....so convicting you is not the main goal here, earning revenue for the municipality is what they are after.
Someone is going to make money in traffic court and its not going to be the accused. Our judicial system, while superior to other countries, is still a broken system. |

Because of indifferent politicians; ignorant judges; complacent attorneys; and impotent registered voters. |

We don't. The Police actually have a number of laws, the Bill of Rights, and Department Policies that we have to work within.
Some people only think we do whatever we want because they don't understand their rights, don't know the law, or believe they can do whatever they want regardless of the law. |

Most police officers I know do not feel that way at all, it is their job to enforce the law. |

We don't do 'whatever we want nowadays'. Thats a ridiculous assumption to make. Police are merely doing a job in an ever changing society. You are either a rejected wannabe cop or a law breaker. You maybe want to grow up and get a career instead judging the demanding work carried out by others. |

The standards for law enforcement personnel have been greatly reduced, most cops are just thugs with badges. Don't go looking for trouble because you will find it. Make sure you have a cell phone camera and use it! |

Not all cops abuse their power. A majority of cops don't abuse their power. As a police officer, you have to treat everyone like royalty. It seems everyone hates you for what you do and who you are. But, when they need someone when they are in trouble they call you, and then they complain how the officer took too long to come. |

Youre making a rather insulting blanket assumption here. Certain police officers (and a minute minority at that) feel that they can do whatever they want. One thing a lot of people fail to realize is that "distractionary strikes" are authorized by most department use of force protocols. As such, the video of the arrest in Philadelphia may not be showing the whole story (ie the suspects were resisting). Let the police inquiry do its job before you make such an ignorant assumption. |

Some ,not all ...Some of them are power abusing idiots . spoils it for the public and gives the good cops a bad , undeserved reputation. |

I wish I knew. I understand they have a job to do and might be needed, but the police I have had contact with have been absolute scum. Everyone says you can file a complaint, but come on now, is it really going to help? Law enforcement needs a makeover because I personally don't respect them the way it is intended for them to be respected. In fact, when I see them even drive by my house I cringe. I know I shouldn't generalize but it is hard when I have been treated like absolute crap by them. I don't trust the police anymore. BTW I am a middle-class suburban housewife, not a drug dealer or thief and I still can't stand the police. |

Because they basically can. Most of them abuse their power. |

Because they are a link to the government. Not only that but cops are basically average men with a mindset of violence before they even get their badges. |

Why do you feel the need to generalize that because there are SOME bad cops, that they ALL are? Sounds like someone who doesn't have a good relationship with the po-po. |
