Why do the civilian populace treat policemen like we think were gods.?

I have worked as a law enforcement officer for 16 yrs. I have always treated people nicely. i hold open doors, i say hello and have a good day. i help any way i can. But because i wear a law officer uniform people look at me with a kind of fear and disgust. people everywhere say don't treat me like this or that just cause i'm this or that. but people label all cops as hard a**es, power hungry, racist, rude, corrupt, and just evil. i got into this line of work to help people, and thats what i do, including having done CPR on several people, changing tires for motorists, and even packing groceries for little old ladies. I am a public servant, but i am treated like scum. That i believe is the root of why some cops have bad attitudes.
QUESTION: Why do we get treated like crap, when we are the ones who run towards the violence when others run away, we are the ones who enter the dark building to find the burglar, we are the ones that have died to protect others? answer me this.

I was treated like a god once. I received a burnt offering from a greasy spoon. |

I was a reserve police officer here in the UK and it was only when I actually put the uniform on and went out on the streets that I realised:
1) that police are just as human as everyone else
2) that the police get treated in the way you describe
2 1/2) but not by everyone - there are some nice people out there too, and I'm sure you appreciate that if you do what you say you do |

I have respect for most of the cops in my" hood".In fact i am damn glad they are there.Like in any profession....gonna have a few bad apples. The really good cops usually get thrown off the force because greenie weenies are running the world. At least your job is one they cant destroy! |

I have two sons who are police officers and I told them from the beginning to please remember that their job is to protect and serve never to harass and intimidate. I am happy and proud to say that they are both great police officers and I believe that the vast majority of officers are in the job to protect and serve the public.
Their are many parents who threaten their children with the police if they are misbehaving - this is a huge disservice to the child and the police. My children were always taught to go to the police if they had a problem, discipline is the parents responsibility not the police.
As a volunteer EMT with a local fire company I was at a call for a 3 year old who had fallen and in our town we are very lucky to have the police respond right along with us. THis child had a lump on his head and was wimpering until the police officer arrived when he started screaming uncontrollably. The mother laughed and said "he's afraid of the cops - he saw his aunt arrested and I tell him I am going to call the cops on him when he is bad" Parents teach their children to fear the only group of people who are paid to protect everyone.
It may seem like everyone is treating you like crap but the majority of the people I know respect the police and are glad to have them around. Don't let the bad people get to you - keep doing a great job and know it is appreciated by many many people. |

the only people that don't appreciate you are those who have something to hide. It isn't you it is what you represent, the Law and what is right.
THANKS FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND KEEP ON BEING NICE. MOST OF US APPRECIATE YOU.
IT IS HARD TO BE A COP,MOST DEPTS.CHECK YOU OUT ALL THE WAY BACK TO FIRST GRADE BEFORE HIRING. YOU HAVE TO BE THE RIGHT KIND OF PERSON. |

it is because the ones that have abused the power you hold has scared the public . the public knows if you really wanted me to go to jail all you have to do is plant some drugs in my car , if you want in my house you will just say the door was open already .
I do not think this way and respect your profession but here is a reason why you get treated like crap |

Here's your answer: What do cops and detectives do to earn them a bad rap?
Why aren't firemen despised like cops are? Exactly! |

basically because "stereo-types" exist for a reason, it's the same reason why I get "treated like crap" from a lot of police officers, they see me and know that I am just some no good punk, and I must be up to something, I can't list how many times I have been singled out because of how I look, now the ones that actually know me have absolutely no problem with me, but the ones that just see me with shaved head, piercings and tats will find a reason to see what I am up to, even though I am an "upstanding" member of society, I have done volunteer work for many organizations, I work with a mentor program, I am planning on being a foster parent and I am starting my own non-profit to help abused and neglected kids, but like I said earlier "stereo-types exist for a reason" and all you will see is a punk with shaved head, piercings and tats, and wonder what I am up to, that's the same reason I will look at you as hard a**, power hungry, racist, rude, corrupt and just evil. |

Frankly because you can legally act on offenses whether people perceive them as offenses or not.
For example in performing a traffic stop, police act as if they give out the notice, but act as if they do not realize what the notice will end up resulting in. If the guy is doing 82 mph in a 55 mph zone, he'll be receiving a montetary penalty plus other resulting penalties depending on the state. It is granted by law than any notice you give the citizen can have his day in court and plee his case, but the citizen has a better chance in talking you out of the ticket.
Elements such as the quota system for traffic stop tickets give images of police as servicemen who deal with people who will end up giving little resistance. In an average patrolman's career, how many times will an officer use a service weapon? 3 or 4 times in a career. How many traffic stops will you perform in your career?
I don't think it's 3 or 4 times. |

My experience with police has never been good, When I was 14 years old and got caught smoking in the park the cop snuffed out the cigarette on back of my hand. In Los Angeles I was riding with a friend coming from the movies with ,our wife's and children, one cop took my friend to the back of the car and me to the front, his 1st question is I have seen you before at city hall, and I said you might have I've been on Jury duty for 2 weeks, then he said , We are not looking at you its your friend we are after, What is he into ? They questioned us for an hour and would not let my 3 year old daughter get out of the car to pee. After they let us go ,my friend said they also told him they were after me. Why would you think I do not like cops, I hate Them! |

I think the police are the scum of the Earth, but they carry guns and night sticks and mace so you have to be nice to them... or else |

I am a civilian. I have always respected the Police and will always. I have always joked the Police Officer is overpaid 80% of the time but 20% of the time there is nothing you could pay me to do the job. But I must say at times Police Officers give the impression they know best and like to lecture people. I recently received a ticket for not moving left passing a Police Car with his lights on. I was wrong and apologized immediately for the infraction. That was not good enough the officer had to stress how my ignorance was not an excuse. I never said it was. My grandson who was in the Car did not say anything to me but asked his mother later why the officer wanted to pick a fight with Pop Pop. In short I have found that when an officer knows he is coming to help he is kind and caring but when he is coming to ticket or get you he is an aggressive person. Thankfully I have never had anything other then traffic infractions so that is the only attitude I have witnessed.
What did I and worse my Grandson who is just 16 learn police officers can argue with you for no reason if they want and they can with attitude dare you to talk back. While I don't think it is intentioned it occurs at times. |
