Why do we have Guns?

Becasue of the huge gun culture that America has I think it is unrealistic to expect the police there to be unarmed. You have to be able to fight like with like otherwise it is a losing battle.

We have guns to protect ourselves. Imagine that if someone was armed when the VT gunman first started shooting. He could have been killed and thereby saved numerous lives. An outlaw will always get a gun, regardless of legality. By the way have you checked out the overall crime rate in Britain, Australia, and some other countries where gun ownership is banned? It is pretty high.

We have guns because we had guns and there isn't a quick simple "poof they're gone" solution. Quit acting like you've been shot and spread the word on what education and respect could do for a society.

you've missed the point old friend British cops have guns not officially but take it from me they have them. Manufacture of guns and ammo keep this worlds economy flourishing so they wont ever go out of fashion

Do you know that every Swiss citizen is legally required to have his military equipment at home, including guns (M57 automatic assault rifles) and ammo ? They keep a very small army, but can mobilize the whole country in 2-3 hours !!! That's one of the reasons Switzerland was never invaded, and during WW2, Nazis were at war with the whole world, including US, UK, and Russia, they went 2000 miles east up to the gates of Moscow, but not in Switzerland, and please check where Switzerland is on the map...
Now, how many times have you heard about shootings in Switzerland ??? The gun crime rate is a small fraction of the American rate, and in fact it's so low that statistics are not even kept... The same for Israel, they all have guns, assault rifles, even machine guns at home, but you'll never see a Swiss killing another Swiss or an Israeli killing another Israeli...
I think it's a matter of EDUCATION and CULTURE, which lead to TOLERANCE and RESPECT for others. Forcing people to obey stupid laws and gun control is NOT the answer, that can only lead to rebellion and more chaos. Sane, responsible, educated FREE people do not have any reason to take a gun and shoot another human being ...

Although the average bobby on the street in UK is indeed unarmed, he can call for back up from an armed response unit.

Guns are now a serious problem here in UK with an ever increasing rise in the rate of gun crime which is often associated with the drugs culture of the lower orders of society.

USA is quite a different story. Their Constitution entitles the Citizens Militia to bear arms. If they have a problem then it's for them to sort it out. Nothing we say will change the state of play in America.

Guns are not the issue but, instead, the problem lies with the ability for people to use them improperly to assert control over other people. The only thing which could be accomplished by outlawing guns altogether would be to take them away from law abiding people. The criminals would still have them... think about it: if they're already engaged in criminal behavior which causes them to believe that they need guns, then they will not hesitate to break the law in order to acquire firearms; they are already breaking the law, anyway. Now, this idea may seem a little outlandish to many people, but.... If you consider that true careeer criminals constitute only 6% of the total population then, if everyone was issued a handgun and trained to use it properly, you might see that 6% begin to disappear for fear of being confronted by the other 94% of the armed, law abiding population. In effect, proper distribution of firearms could actually cause a decrease in crime trends.

As a Briton involved in the Criminal Law system, I can assure my American friends that the UK Police do have guns, and can use them.

The UK (unwritten) Constitution is different to that of the USA. I understand that any US citizen is able to keep a firearm by right. In the UK, even hunting guns, such as .22 shotguns, are subject to strict legislation. Because there are so few legal, lethal weapons about, our Police do not have to carry guns when on general duty.

Maybe the US needs to review its policy concerning publicly-held weaponry. No need for histrionics or anti-US rants, but it may just be possible that the USA could learn a bit from their British cousins.
