I was in a Parliament building yesterday and they asked me to put my purse through the security scan. They then asked me to take out my phone and 'open it' (it's a flip phone).
Just wondering why.....

They do this because some people will take a phone and implant a weapon in it, so that it still looks like a phone. Opening it ensures that this cannot happen. |

To insure that it is actually a cell phone and not a cell phone case with a bomb inserted inside. Same for radios, tape players, MP3s, and other personal electronics. |

If a person hollowed out the case on a flip phone - leaving only the back and sides - there's enough space to hide several things a terrorist could use - like plastic explosives. That small amount of plastic explosive could be equivalent to a hand grenade or worse. |

They were probably checking for anything along the lines of drugs, sharp objects, or harmful items. People hide things anywhere nowadays. |

To make sure it's a real cellphone. There are some very sophisticated explosives that hidden in a cellphone could do some real damage. |

I assume they are checking for any malicious software on your cell phone. Or they could be checking if you are smuggling anything into the building. |
