Why don't cops act more alert recently?

there's been a lot of cop-killing lately. It's kind of odd that they get shot so easily.
Most cops i've seen on TV gone up to a car or a suspect like they are taking a stroll.. no wonder they got shot if the suspect intend to shoot.

I always thought cops were supposed to hold one hand on their weapon ready to pull out as they apporach any subject, so if anything should happen, they can pull out and return fire.

Do you really believe everything you see on TV?
Do you really believe cops stroll up to their suspects?
Do you really think they get shot so easily?

They are alert and ready to use their weapon when approaching a dangerous suspect. But not everyone is considered dangerous. Contrary to what you believe, they don't have practice this with everyone. Can you imagine a cop approaching an old lady in a car that he pulled over for not using her turn signal? No, that would be asinine, just like Sparky said.

Cops sometimes get caught unaware by deranged people, who are very unpredictable. Cops are well-trained, but they can't possibly be trained for every situation they face.

If we had our hands on our guns all of the time, the public would call us gun happy and paranoid. We can't win.

As far as those getting killed lately, it has been more of an ambush situation which is pretty darned hard to predict, detect, or prevent. If there is someone out there bent on killing a cop, a cop is going to die. It doesn't happen more often because most hard core criminals don't want to die either. It's just the crazies out there that are so darned dangerous.

It is very clear that you have no experience with police officers or police work beyond watching TV. Please go on a ride along with an officer from your local department and learn something.

Doing a traffic stop is probably the second deadliest thing that can happen in policing behind a domestic call. There's a reason why the area around another persons vehicle is called a killing field.

The thing you're missing here is this: Financial failure cause people to snap. Much like the other poster here, I strongly suggest going on a ride along with your local detachment.
