Why don't we let prisoners pay for their time in jail?

Madoff's wife has millions of dollars which she can keep because she didn't commit a crime and it is her money. Why do taxpayers have to carry the costs for his prosecution and his time in jail if his wife could cover those costs easily would there be such a law to force the wife to pay for such expenses?

In theory a good idea...

But in reality for say the average prisoner could their family really afford to pay the expenses? It costs roughly £38000 per year here in the UK to keep a convict locked up, that is more than the average wage. If the family is burdened with that then how would they survive? Would they themselves turn to crime? Seek help from the state? It would be a downward spiral.

We need to go back to the way it use to be and put criminals in solitary confinement for the duration of their stays.

Cable TV. Magazines. Gang fights.

Screw that. Put their butts in a hole and let them think about what they did for months on end and you'll see people not wanting to go back.

That is an absolutely great idea. I really like it. I guess they do pay a tiny portion from the fees given to them when they are released but nothing compared to their actual care. Someone should present this to a legislature somewhere.
