Why dont the Police act?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why dont the Police act?

I live in a village in North Yorkshire, UK.

Every day vehicles tear through the village despite a 30 mph limit.

The County Council did a traffic survey showing 70% of vehicles passing through the village do so breaking the speed limit. They have known about this for over a year, they have done nothing and do not reply to emails.

THE POLICE have had copies of the report, know of the law breaking every day, do nothing and dont reply to emails.

My County Councillor has not even replied to my emails.

In the last 12 months numerous accidents have happened with vehicles travelling too fast and leaving the road.

Children walk up and down the road (without a footpath)to get the school bus.

Pedestrians have to walk in the road.

THE POLICE,COUNTY COUNCIL AND COUNTY COUNCILLOR have individually and collectively done NOTHING to sort this out and have shown nothing but apathy.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

Direct action? Get a load of mothers to sit in the road all day, or something.

Got to agree with direct action, and make sure that the local press are involved as well. That way the police and council will be shamed into taking some action

Block the road and call the news papers

Police action must be immediately implemented to catch the violators to prevent accidents.

To Lisa.....It says right at the top of the question that this person lives in a village in 'North Yorkshire UK'
( a truly beautiful part of the world it is too which is high praise indeed from someone who lives in God's garden - Cheshire)

North Yorkshire is in Great Britain, England specifically so we don't have the same rules and regulations as Americans.

Anyway, to the questioner. This is an issue in lots of places..Have you tried a letter to your MP yet, this would seem the next logical step....failing that, then direct action would seem the most appropriate way of bringing this to the attention of the authorities.

Good luck.

Have you tried the local MP. They usually are on the look out for something that makes them look good in the news!
Failing that a slow march demo at rush hour?
Don't be tempted to set up a home CCTV camera as a guy round here did that after same situation and they came to deal with him instead. The law is stupid.

I don't know what to tell you, I've lived here in the UK for two years almost and I can't see that the police are good for much they have lmited ability to act on anything so it seems. I wish you luck!

I would write to all these people again, by post, and send a copy to your mp as well, and make sure the others know you have sent it to them. You can find out who that is here: http://www.upmystreet.com/commons/l/

Your mp HAS to answer you, and it's quite likely the other agencies will feel compelled to respond just because you've sent it to your mp. At the very least, your mp will contact them to request the details they've failed to provide you with.

Possibly just emailing your mp will be enough, as they have to reply to that too, but if I were in your position I'd send the same letter to all of them, making it clear who it had been sent to.

Contact one of the speed safety campaigns like BRAKE or Rospa. You can make reference to the report showing the number of speeding drivers.

Dr Simon
Get all the residents in your village to club together and buy a hand held speed camera. Gather your evidence and with the help of a solicitor send it directly to the Crown Prosecution Service.

I could suggest some harsh vigillante action but I would be told off by the w@?kers at yahoo again.

Petition your council to build a bye-pass

one shot
Had the same problem some time ago.

We got a petition up & presented it at the local council meeting. At the same time I purchased a totally legal dummy speed camera and attached it on the edge of my property - that made the buggers slow down!!

We had "action days" with locals driving down the road at the legal limit.

Result - we now have regular visits by the police with the camera as they consider it better than 100+ local vehicles taking to the road for the days of action.

Johnny
You need a journalist. Contact your local paper.

Andre
SPREAD AWARENESS

Gather facts and figures. Outline failures of the local police and council. Print fliers (photocopies) and put them on shock places (say, by the pedestrian crossings)

TAKE TO THE STREETS!!!

I'm sure you're not alone in this. agitate your neighbours and block a road!

MAXIMISE POLITICAL IMPACT

Suggest REAL solutions (not just "make them go slower", that's not a solution") . Aerial passage? Speed cameras? With a direction well outlined, its time for...

ACTION

Block roads, Litter a stretch of road with heavy boulders (warn drivers a few yards before). Slow them down and give fliers to the drivers.

On the Sleigh (again!)
Jump in front of a car, we all know the old bill here do nothing until someone dies.

Not ready to do that?

You can find something more important to obsess over than the speed limit. Your police aren't doing anything because they have more important things to do. There are accidents all over the world, not just in your town, people going over 30 mph isn't the end of the world.

If you are obsessive / compulsive I'd suggest focusing on why there are no footpaths along your roads, it isn't a police matter but it would be much more productive. It may actually result in footpaths but your current obsession with speed limits only makes you annoying to everyone in your town.

LISA
forget the town, contact the state. also, many states have a law that if children are in a walking district or walk to school, the town MUST supply sidewalks. i would check into that as well. also, contact local newspapers and have them do a story about it - embarrass the local county/town for doing nothing.
