I noticed you had no answers, so here is mine. I believe the average citizen (and I mean the citizen who recognizes the necessity of having police who actively enforce the law) wants law enforcement officers who take their job seriously for the purpose of keeping order and peace in our society. And of course the way you do that is by enforcing the law. Which means a law enforcer must be MOTIVATED to go out and do so. This means you may be doing things that are dangerous, including the risking of your life; the motivation to ultimately put your life on the line, if you must, for the protection of people you don't even know. What if those four Oakland police officers or the three Pittsburgh police officers who were recently killed lacked the motivation to do their jobs? Perhaps they would all be alive. Or perhaps some innocent citizen would have paid with their life for an officer's lack of motivation.

I have been a police training officer for nearly twenty-eight years. I can tell you unequivocally that lack of motivation will get you failed out of the training process just about faster than anything else.
