Why is speeding bad?

At higher speeds, it is harder to control your car and as a result, accidents are more likely to happen. Your reaction time will be much shorter the faster you're going. You can't control the other drivers and if one of them should cut into your lane while you're speeding, you have less time to jam on the brakes or look over your shoulder to see if there's space to cut over to the next lane to avoid a collision. The faster you go, the bigger the impact when/if you hit something, the higher the mortality rate.

Speeding doesn't kill, stopping does.
Lets look at the facts, autobahn has better safety records and has no speed limits at all.

Speeding becomes a problem when cars are in close proximity because everyone is traveling the same speed, because of people tailgating when they do not want to obey the posted limit and because of hesitation and accidents caused by poor estimations on speed of oncoming traffic when turning and switching lanes.

If we didn't have speed limits, no one would tailgate, cars would be spaced much farther apart since they are not all forced to move like sheep and there would be enough space between cars with no traffic to worry about when making turns and switching lanes.

Think about it, are you more likely to bump into people when you are all forced to walk a foot apart, or when you have as much room as you want to spread out and get away from one another as you need?

I do not agree that speeding is bad. I lived in Europe for 4 years. The minimum speed I drove on the Autoban was 220 km/hr.

Speeding is bad because dumbasses don't have control of the vehicles, don't look ahead at the road and have poor driving skills

Unfortunately we have way.......way to many on our roads, look at the autobahn, one of the fastest roads in the world and also the safest, any abuse or bad driving is nipped in the bud.

And speed doesn't kill ya, it's the sudden stop

The reason speeding is bad is because people are made up of 98% water. Water at high velocities will splatter all over the place. Next time you are on a long trip look at all the bugs squashed on your window shield and realize the consiquences.

You can lose control of the car more easily and crash into something. It takes a longer distance to come to a complete stop when you press on the brakes so if you're trying to stop quickly it's not going to happen. You have less of a response time to avoid cars or pedestrians who unexpectedly come infront of you so the chances of hitting the car or person are much greater.

See if you can get statistics on accident rates and relationship to speed. Look for fatality rates broken down by speed as well.

It takes longer to slow down and stop when you're speeding. In your essay you can discuss the German Autobahn. The Autobahn has areas of road where there is absolutely no speed limit. You could compare the German rules of the autobahn and the American rules of the interstates.

at speed a car is harder to control - steer,stop, maneuver, etc. the time to react to something in the road by the driver is much smaller too. so, the chances of having an accident are increased, thereby endangering the public as well as the driver. and for the greenies out there, increased speed means increased fuel consumption.

Once country didn't have speed limits. But so many accidents were caused by people being in experienced and unable to safely control theire car at high speed. Also many roads are not designed for high speeds. Many cars could not safely hanble highspeeds. Mis-judging when to start to slowing down for corners or taking corners to fast. So to try and stop these accidents, speed limits were put in force and reduced to a speed most people can safely control their vehice. Speed limits in towns are what govrnment and council believes drivers can safely drive in these areas with out risking others lives.
Look at experienced arcing drivers and the speeds they travel at. They still have accidents, but to stop serious injuries their cars are fitted with roll bars and other crash guards. The driver and passengers have a different type of seat belt to what we have in normal cars too.
Imagine being a pedestrian and trying to cross a road?

The faster you go the less control you have over a vehicle. If you lose control people can die.

It also makes it harder to stop short if you need to. In icy or rainy conditions you can slide and slam into other cars or pedestrians.

Because your vehicle becomes harder to control and your reaction times to road emergencies and hazards are greatly reduced. Not too mention it poses a risk to everyoen else on the road.

Moreover, speeding doesn't save time. People who speed are burning gas faster and putting more wear and tear on thier vehicles thus reducing the service life of the vehicle.

one word: accidents. People are given freedom to operate deadly machines, and often they take for granted how bad a simple mistake can be. Forget to glance right when you're watching a line of cars - you hit a pedestrian. It isn't only your own capacity for speeding. Ever been in highway traffic with someone riding your bumper? You break, they are oblivious.

It's not. Collisions are bad.

Speed does not kill. Collisions do. I've driven over 170 mph on a motorcycle, and suffered no ill effects.

Pick a stretch of rural interstate, around 3am, and crank it up.
It's EXTREMELY fun. Very dangerous (for the rider and no one else), but lots of fun. Like skydiving or wrestling alligators, I suppose.

Speeding is a form of civil disobedience. It is disrespecting the authority of the government to protect its citizens. Even if no one is hurt, speeding is bad. Speeding makes it necessary for police officers to patrol the streets instead of go after real criminals. When someone speeds, that means the entire community is hurt due to the lack of protection because of a shortage of police. If a conveniece store is robbed, it needs help now. If the cop is busy, well it will be too late

so even if you dont get caught its bad because they have to patrol the streets waiting for you

Well, the obvious reason is that the faster your car is going, the harder it is to control. Most good drivers know their limits though. The main reason we have such wussy speed limits in some parts (like 55 MPH - come ON people!) is so that more tickets can be given and the government can collect more revenue.
