Because it is a religious practice just like any other. Just not mainstream.

As long as no laws are broken, why shouldn't it be. Have you not seen the new TV shows where they talk to ghosts to solve old crimes?

Because in our system of law only that which has been explicitly forbidden by law is illegal, everything else is perfectly legal.

Until and unless the occult is forbidden by law it will be legal.

Lorien C
Oh, a silly thing called Constitutional rights!

Everyone in the US is free to practice whatever religion they choose.

I'm assuming you are referring to Pagan or Wiccan beliefs when you say occult. Both of those are probably the least threatening of all religions.

SuperVibrationalEscrow
Why would it not be in a country that is supposed to be based around the concept of freedom of belief and expression? Plus, there is not any way humanly possible that you can outlaw beliefs. Simply saying okay from now on the occult is now illegal, that is not going to stop anyone who practices it from stopping. What, are you going to tell someone who believes they are psychic.. stop having visions or we will arrest you?

angelbearkiss
Because thankfully, you live in a country where you're free to practice what you are spiritually inclined to practice and cannot be prosecuted for it.

Why not.

globar
Freedom of speech the right to practise your beliefs.

Vaughn
Separation of church and state, for one thing--many occult practices (Voodoo, Santeria, Wicca) are religions. For another, most of what you imagine practicioners of the occult might do that is harmful is already illegal, like, say, animal sacrifice. But most occult practicioners are also against those crimes (many believe in the rule, "harm none"). So why *wouldn't* the occult be legal?

Why wouldn't it be if they are not breaking any other laws. Their right to exist is part of the constitution, just at the NAACP, KKK, VFW, or what ever.

Which occult? In any case, unless it is doing harm or breaking laws, it is protected by the freedom of religion we have in the United Staes of America. Besides, look at the one religion nations of the world and compare the alternative.

Because the Human Rights Act gives everyone the freedom to practice the religion of his or her choice.

Snuffy
it is a "religion" and as long as no laws are broken, why
wouldn't it be. It is, after all , legal for me to practice and live
Christianity.

We tend to outlaw ACTIONS, not beliefs. That is the basis of the 1st amendment to the US Constitution.

Whitch hunts didn't work any better than this so called war on terror! In your case I would ask, could ignorance be a crime?

Get yourself a copy of the 1st Amendment to the U.S. constitution and read it carefully. It is so easy to understand that you don't need a law professor to go throug it with you or anything. Then you'll understand why the occult is legal. Thanks for the 2 points.

Since El Scott is using the Malleus Maleficarum, I figured I should get out the Necronomicon...you can never have too many sources when trying to tackle this kind of inquisition. And Scott I think if she floats, she's not a witch...but I could be wrong. I ran out of eye of newt this morning.

Freedom of religion is gauranteed under the Bill of Rights. Until such time a crime is committed the occult following is legal.

because the constitution protects the freedom to practice religiously without the fear of persecution. if your concern is in regards to stories of harm brought upon innocents, consider this...although a vague term, i guess you refer to 'satanic cults', witchcraft, paganism, live sacrifice, etc? many satanic beliefs are based on the existence of, which christianity does not dispute, on the contrary, for without the existence of 'evil', why would anyone seek salvation? salvation from what?? witchcraft as well as paganism are two of the worlds oldest religions, in the regions now included in europe & elsewhere, these were practiced widespread in seek of wisdom & grace from the gods. only the dominance of christianity sent the hold-out followers underground & created the opinion that they were evil & somehow dangerous. in regards to sacrifice, i would imagine every society worldwide has developed consequences to those who bring harm to humans or animal unneccessarily. whether it be an eye for an eye or the judicial process in the USA, when an innocent is harmed the people avenge. and one last thought: christianity-thou shalt not blah blah blah gave us clinic bombings, stalled stem cell research & of course our esteemed-makes policy by personal chats with god-leader, george w. research your constitution, please, because unless you are twelve or not a citizen, your question is embarrassing.

Lillith
Occult is not a religion, it is a term that has come to describe certain studies and ways of spirituality.
The definition of occult simply put means 'hidden knowledge'
Many people confuse the term 'occult' with 'a cult'.
A cult is an organization.

The day that 'occult' becomes illegal is the day that all the worlds governments cover-ups will be made public.

Let me dust of my Malleus Maleficarum and get back to you.

I can never remember if the one that floats or the one that sinks is suppose to be the witch.
