Why not just legalize most recreational drugs?
|
I originally asked this question in "politics" now I'd like law enforcement's views.
We have been waging a “war” on drugs for 40 years and yet, cocaine and heroin are more plentiful, cheaper, and purer today than they were when we started.
The “war” on drugs has been a massive waste of manpower and money. It has become a self perpetuating industry that is a bigger failure than GM, AIG and Merrill Lynch combined.
Most drugs should be legalized for adults, taxed excessively (with those taxes earmarked for prevention & education), and distributed only through pharmacies and hospitals.
Penalties for crimes committed under influence would be in additional to the original crime. If robbery gets you 5 years you get an additional 5 for robbery under the influence.) Selling ANY controlled drug to a minor is 10 years in jail, second offense 20. Third is death.

i did a report on this issue and beforehand, i was not for it. afterwards though, it made sense to just legalize it, tax it very heavily, and just be done with it. it would save money on keeping people in jail for it. the only problem you run into is that people would find a way to get around the tax and still do it illegally. so, who knows. |

EXCUSE ME WTF R U DOIN?

Legalizing cocaine and heroin is a very bad idea. Unlike marijuana, those actually kill you...they deteriorate the body at a rapid pace, with noticeable side effects. And they're far more addictive, getting of them is an incredible challenge.
Legalize weed, but keep the hard stuff illegal. |

MJ S, run for office and I'll vote for you. (In other words, I agree with you). |

Actually under the current administration, this is more possible than ever. The legalization and taxation of marijuana would do wonders for the economy. Think about this. You would have the Farm owners, who would employ farmers to work and tend to the plants. When the farmers sell to the manufactures they would get taxed. The manufactures would employ workers who would package and distribute it, and they would get taxed. Then you would have the buyer who would pay a state and local tax on the product. Just like cigarettes. However, one of the biggest sources of money saving would come from not having to fund law enforcement to pot raids which use helicopters, boats, and whatever else. Its to in depth, it could turn our economy around almost by itself. |

"The “war” on drugs has been a massive waste of manpower and money."
Whilst we are having information force-fed into us that it is not, people will believe that the war on drugs is a war worth fighting.
It's information that is the acting influence in this instance. |

.. .this can't be good
|
It would definitely cut down on crime. If all drugs were legal, then everyone would be so high they wouldn't notice all the other things that are wrong in the world |

i think all drugs should be legalized. but since you mentioned how much government fails at what they do, im hesitant to tax the drugs and let the government decide what to do with the money. even if it did go to prevention and education, its the governments views on those issues that the money will finance. just let people decide if they want to do drugs or not. this is america. and people should be tried for the crime they commit, not what they did before the crime. |

All that stuff harms your body. Also, those chemicals are also a big time waster. Drug and alcohol users could be spending time mentoring kids or helping out their community. |
