well i called them once when my car was stolen....(they didnt even bother tuning up till about three days later) once when my flat was broken into. thet again!! turned up about three days later. SO!! i have to agree. they are f@cking hopeless and frankly should take a cut. just as they seem to have given us a cut in the quality of the service we pay for. |

Don't get angry with us because you were never qualified for the position, If I have to risk my life for someone as yourself, would you rather pay me to do it, or do it yourself?
It's not police officers that "[...] pick on motorists" - it is the doctrine set forth by politicians who were voted into office by their constituents - YOU!
So lets allow the reckless motorists run rampant, and when a loved one of yours is killed in a MVA, I am sure your first question will be - "Where's the police?" |

Yeah I mean its not like they ever have to investigate a homicide,or rape or anything. They never put their lives in danger for people they have never met. If you don't want a ticket then don't speed. If you want to speed then don't complain. |

That is not all they do, that is just all you see them do. Patrol is the most visible division on a department.
As far as "picking on motorists", that is predictable an avoidable, as they only pick on the ones breaking the law. |

People aren't sure what they want from the police - they want the police to go after blood criminals like rapists and murderers, but think it's an injustice when they enforce laws that inconvenience them.
Chances are, a motorist who thinks a policeman has "picked on him" was caught breaking road laws, but doesn't think what they did was enough of a problem.
It's not an easy job being a policeman - most people work 8 hours on weekdays for a modest 40 hours a week. A policeman may work 80-100 hours a week, on top of the fact that people detest them. Metropolitan policing is one of the more dangerous jobs available, but never mind that, some people can't tolerate being given a ticket when at fault. |

They pick on motorists who are driving dangerously (i.e., drunk, over the speed limit). Stop breaking traffic laws and cops will stop "picking" on you. |

Just a few corrections though....
1) They do much more than pick on motorists. You sound like a fool. Motorist, by the way, die 45,000 times a year in the US. More than the "real crime" I assume you think they should be fighting kills.
2) I know of no department that offers a top notch pension, as you state, after 15 years. The minimum is 20 years, with many, many localities requiring 25,30 plus years. I honestly do not have the time to explain to you why cops can't work til 60 years of age. BTW, most professional employers offer pensions. Loser jobs like yours, probably do not.
3) Um...you can leave any job, if you don't like it....ur point?
4) If you think its SOOOOOOO wonderful, take the test, get the job. Its open to ANYONE qualified to be hired. Put your money where your mouth is if it so wonderful...
I find 99.9% of anti cop jealousy has TWO origins :
1) criminals
2) wanna be's

And I know that sometimes they mess up operations, but most of the time, they do do really well! They keep us safe, protected from crimes and Criminals! They sometimes get it wrong but they do a good job! I feel sorry for the Police force in a way because if they strike for one day, then all of the crimes will take place in one day! The crime rates will go up more!! Then afterwards, they will have to do more work after the strike!
Also you have to consider that England and Scotland were promised a pay rise and so far only Scotland have got this pay rise! and the engilsh police force haven't yet! |

first - they only retire after 15years if they are of retirement age unless it's through ill health.
second - they have far more important things to do than pick on motorists unless they are breaking the law in which case they deserve to be picked on.
third - the government insisted they go to arbitration for their pay deal - arbitration awarded them 2.5% from September - the government should have stuck to the deal especially since MPs are asking for more than 2.5.
I'm not a copper but i still know it's a job most people couldn't do - they are all that stands between us an anarchy matey. |

I don't really think you know what is involved in Policing, but someone who decided to post this kind of comment, what can someone expect?
You've never had someone killed in your family then because of a drink driver?
OR
You've never had an uninsured motorist go into your vehicle?
As well as the Roads Policing Unit there are lots of other departments, CID, Child Protection etc.
Because when I know I need genuine help I dial 999 and that Officer that comes out to HELP ME, when he kisses his wife and kids goodbye in the morning he doesn't know if he is every going to come home again.....
I think that's worth a lot more money than their on, and certainly more than some football player or MP. |

Actually we do 30 years for a decent pension, of which we contribute 11% of our wages (much more than other public sector workers). |

You dint know the cops I know. These men and woman are great. They should be paid much better. Drunk drivers can kill you. If you have ever had a relative get killed due to a drunk driver you may understand a little more. The area I live in has mass of meth labs. These labs are usually run by idiots who brought their children with them. Little kids new born to 12 years old, living in the squallier and mess of their parents drugs and true filth. Crawling on the floor that are so dirty and have had so much chemicals spilled on them. The kids usually are malnourished and covered with sores and diaper rash from hell. The parents don't give a dam just want the welfare check and drugs. These are just two things of the many that police officers do. They are brave and most of them really do want to make a difference. |

The Police don't get a pension until after 30 years of service, unless they've previously been in the armed service where they can carry there pension over.
You ask "if they don't like their jobs they can leave"
Correct, thats what happened in the early 70s a lot of officers left and the Government ended up having to raise their pay by a hell of a lot and improve their conditions just to get the numbers back.
And they don't pick on motorists, they pick on people who commit crime, don't commit a road traffic offence and you wont get done, the same as don't commit murder and you won't get done. |

They don't just pick on motorists, I wouldn't put my life on the line every day for the money they get and that's what they do, having to face the thugs on the streets. It's not the Officers fault they can't attend every crime, this is due to the government setting ridiculous targets and forcing them to spend so much time on paperwork. |

Looking at avatar I think you should get some employment. So they retire after 15 years, well I went 12 years over retiring age. A promise is a promise. The government promised that their pay rise would be backdated. The government broke that promise saying that they could now not afford to pay it.
They then sent almost 40 times the amount of money that pay backdating would have cost to China and India earlier this week. |

Wreck less driving is the real reason they go after the motorists. If it weren't for the cops people would be driving at such high speeds that there would be so many pile-ups and deaths on the streets. People need to have the cops around. Why do you hate cops? Let the hate go.
Without law and order criminals will over run the cities and towns and us innocent people will be living in fear. We need the police and I think they are not getting paid enough for what they do. They don't retire after 15 years. Also their pensions are not 'top notch' as you put it. America's finest needs to get paid a whole lot more. |
