Why so many fat cops?

There are a few in every department, and in every other job description. Personally in the law enforcement field, it is highly recommended to stay in shape for safety reasons, but to each his or her own. By the way, I am in pretty good shape, and I only run to get away from deadly danger, but as for chasing dirtbags, I let my 4 legged land shard do that for me, plus he loves it..!!!!!

I have often wondered that myself..
I think the police should be in great physical shape. It should be a qualification. They should also have a time standard for running 50 yards.

I actually agree with you. There should be limits on how fat guys can get. I had one partner that couldnt run more than 20 yards...I ended up doing foot chases alone. I'm glad I only wound up with him for 2 months.

yes police should be able to physically carry out their duties, if not put them behind a desk. I do not want my husband counting on someone to back him up who can't take 5 steps without being out of breath. That being said, most are in good shape and the fat ones just deliver court papers.

The problem is that if a dept. requires their officers to maintain a certain level of physical fitness, then the officers are considered "on the clock" when they are exercising. If an officer happens to injure himself, then they would be considered injured during the course of employment and the dept. would have to pay for med expenses, time off, etc..

But you are right, they should stay in shape. Many cops do this on their own anyways, however, many don't. This makes things more dangerous for them, their co-workers, and the public.

There are fat police officers b/c once they pass their physical from the acedemy, then that's all the physical work they do. i think all police departments should have physical testing 4 times a year, once in each season.

Yes, police should stay in shape, for their own good & their partners. Problem is, if departments start coming down on officers for being out of shape, the "discrimination" word will start getting thrown around, and it will cause more trouble than it's worth for departments. They'll claim they have a disability, and well all know you can't discriminate against the "disabled".

Because many eat fast food in between calls, its easy, doesn't require them to prepare before work, and as we all know, it's tasty. Not all officers are fat, but some are. Some departments offer incentives to staying in shape. Annual or bi-annual fitness tests, if passed, the department would reward them with a vacation day.

They used to have regulations------but over the yrs. all has gone to hell in a hand basket

Yeah they should but nine times out of ten they are in good with the police chief and he lets them slide every time. That just shows how cops are no good and they are all for themselves. but watch out I've heard that the lawyer you hire literally sits down and has lunch with the judge and the prosecutor on a daily basis.

Well a cop went to my school once and he said that they eat donuts on the go because they have so many criminals to get to..

well my cousin is a cop and well.. my cousin is a little big.. i guess because they sit around all day eating donuts unless thhey see something bad.. and that donut thing isnt a lie.. they get like half off donuts from donut shoppes soo =]
