Probably because he was on TV.
I've never heard of an officer finding that offensive.
It was derived from the first uniforms that had copper buttons and a copper badge. They were called "coppers", or cops, for short. There is nothing derogatory about it. |

I actually prefer to be called "cop" as my screen name suggests. But I have met other officers who see it as disrespect.
EDIT: btw, I have never heard a police officer refer to an offender as a "perp", not a real one anyway. |

The only time I can see LEOs not likeing the word 'cops' is if is preceeded with the word 'fuc****'. It never bothered me in 28 years. :-) |

Because it is a slang word and some people just hate slang. Just a guess. |

No idea why he would be offended. I've never been offended by being called 'cop' in twelve years. |

Cop is a slang word and may not be liked by some. It is a common expression but they are police officers and should be refered to as such. Many dint mind being called cops but it is not the correct term |

The truth hurts!! They all want to demand respect instead of earning it. |

The word "COPS" came from Greek homage, "man in uniform holding a gun at the dough nut shop." It is an insult to most cops, I mean calling them "cops."
The correct thing to say is officer!!! And if you ever see them in a dough nut shop; it's better not to say a word except to plea the fifth. |

I thought COP derived from "Constable on Patrol"I've never heard of "police officer" offended by the use of this word.Maybe he just wanted the host to be "Politically correct" on TV? |

The person takes his profession seriously and the profession has a correct name. I think cops is a slang term and demeans some police officers. People should show some respect to a person educated and trained in their profession. |

Same reason suspects don't like to be called "perps". It's OK for them to name call but not anyone else. |
