If the criminal killed more than one perosn and is likely to reoffend then they may give them more than one life sentence. These sentences may be back to back or seperated. Serial killers or brutal murderers usually end up with multiple life sentences. I live in Australia and we don't have the death penalty any more. Examples from Australia that you may wish look up and reconsider that everyone has only one life live (some are just where they are meant to be), look up; Ivan Milat and the Backpacker Murders (they are still searching for bodies in Belanglo years later); The Cobby Killers and Anita Cobby (this happened in the 60's, my mother went to school with Anita Cobby); Port Arthur massacre; that's only 3. What about the terrorists and September 11? Or the Bali bombings?Seriously. |

Because its another way our ridiculous juducial system operates. Instead of just executing people for heinous crimes, because so many people think it is barbaric punishment, they try to lock them away. Our legal/judicial system is so faulty that guilty people get out of prison only to commit more crimes.
Its a joke. |

The longer the sentence is in years, the longer it will take the inmate to be eligible for parole, so if the cases of serial murderers, 5 consecutive life sentences, means he/she will never get out of prison, unless they live to be 500 years old. It also brings some closure to the families of the victims, knowing that the perpetrator is serving time for the life of their individual loved one as well as all of the other victims. |

It's partly about parole. If the law wants to be able to let some convicts out early for exemplary behaviour it has to allow all convicts the same rights of a parole hearing before their full term is served. If a convict has consecutive terms to serve, the parole will only reduce the current sentence. |

They stack the sentences in such a way that may seem ridiculous, however, a life sentence does not always mean life. Depending on the state you're in, someone with a life sentence may actually come up for and make parole. Another reason is that a person may win an appeal for a certain case, so the consecutive life sentences assures that whatever happens, the convicted person serves the longest sentence allowed by law. |

Life sentence actually means fifteen years. In reality, because of Parole, most people do a lot less.
By passing sentence to run consecutively, if you get released for the first crime (appeal, parole) you still have to stay in jail for the other crimes. This way you can be in prison for longer.
If you ran them concurrently, they would all finish at once and you'd do a max of 15 years. |

Hi, just learned about Lemaricus davidson´s sentence, he was sentenced to 80 years to be served consecutively to 2 prior death sentences (http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2010/jun/12/davidson-gets-80-more-years/) So, in practical terms what does the above means? That he must first serve 80 years before execution? It doesn´t make much sense to me the other way around. Thanks in advance |
