i live in oregon and they do it all the time, especially to younger people, to check age, if they have a warrant, its just a way to run peoples names just in case they come across someone they want, and its not against the law, a cop can ask for your ID whenever they want |

CHECKING FOR WARRANTS |

was your passenger acting suspicious. LOL
Cops can ask for anyones ID if they want. They might want to check to make sure that person has no warrants or etc. He might of had a feeling about your passenger. |

maybe the cops just did for regular checking, that's all. |

you where in a car that wa pulled over, therefore they can ask to see anyones ID in the car that is pulled over. thats the law, it's the same in every state. |

Because the passenger is in your car, thus you have possession of them. Maybe to check for outstanding warrents? |

The answer to your question so we know who is who. I do not know your passenger's name or age plus on top of that I want to find out if they have any warrants out on them. |

The passenger was checked for possible warrants. Age is not a factor. The passenger could very well have been entered as a missing person or a juvenile runaway. The officer was doing his job. You never know what or who your going to encounter. |

THey are probably are looking for somebody and the one in the passenger seat might have look exactly like the person they are looking for.
Just obey the laws, they are there for a reason! |

You got stopped because you broke the law. Your passenger's identification was checked as a routine, it did not matter your age. Had you any drugs or alcohol on either party you would have been apprehended into custody. You handled it as good as you could since you cooperated, but you can still have more charges added to your ticket if they come up with something, so just appear on time and see about hiring a lawyer. You won't want the charge against your insurance carrier. |

This has happened to me before. My situation which I found out after a long long really long discussion with the officer was this. There had been teenagers in the area slipping into this new subdivision where houses were being built but no one lived yet. They were parking in the dark and drinking and doing drugs and other "stuff" I was out with my friends and we decided to look at the new subdivision. When I turned into the subdivision a car turned in behind me so I was blocked from turning around. I drove to the end of the road and there were 10 or so cop cars who immediately turned on their lights. The reason he took everyone's ID was to run Warrant checks. If you have a warrant out and they run your license you will be found by license number or by name. He was just making sure none of us had a record or a warrant before he let us go. It was all a big misunderstanding that we laugh about now. |

as a cop of 10 years
I can say this
He was probabally checking to see if your passenger has warrants. This is common, especially if your passenger looks suspicious. |

LEO (law enforcement officers) have a right to protect themselves. This includes the right to ask the associate of a suspect for their identification. |

I would guess that he was checking to make sure your passenger was not wanted on any warrants. It is common practice, at least here, to check everyone in the vehicle. You don't demand their ID you ask them for it and if they give it to you, you run them for wants and warrants. Judges issue warrants, it is Law Enforcements job to serve them. Hope this helps. |

they might have been looking for someone riding in car like yours or someone that looked like your friend. That is the only reason that I can think of.... |

i'm not sure how it works in oregon, but in NJ if you have a restricted license then you can't drive with more than one person who doesn't have a license/isn't in your family.
maybe there are some laws that restrict your license that you didn't know about...
or maybe the cop thought ur friend was hot and wanted to know if it'd be illegal... ;) |

Based on what I've heard, you and your passenger can both get tickets if you do anything against the law. It's not only based on the driver anymore. Let's say your passenger doesn't wear a seat belt, that means, he will get a ticket, and you will get a ticket. But of course, if they're over 16 then the law applies. I think that's why. Cops are stupid though. I hope you didn't get in trouble. =) Careful driving. |

Unless they thought you were high or drinking, I don't believe it was normal for them to ask for the ID. |

Say W, first of all Cops are not stupid. Cops have an education, I am going to college to be a police officer, something that has always interested me, so I am far from being stupid let me tell you. Your a cop hater, so I would watch what you say. I hate criminals and will put them in their place. |

Cops would do anything to write a ticket, they rather harass you than do their job, wait that is their job these days, cops are corrupt these day |
