I don't have one, but in a world full of armed losers I don't want to be the only one unarmed. You never know when a co-worker or collage mate is going to go nuts and decide to shot others co-workers or collage mates with his LEGALLY bought shotgun and AK47. |

Well, recreational shooting (target, skeet, trap...), hunting, household /self defense, collecting firearms of historical significance... there are a lot of reasons. |

Why not? Do I need to justify every purchase I make? |

ofp has it right.
Banning guns won't save any lives, Violent people will always find something else... and the truth be told knives are deadlier. A person is much more likely to survive getting shot then they will if they are stabbed, look it up. |

My first handgun was for protection purposes as I carried large sums of cash. The rest are for fun. |

Here are just some reasons to get a gun:
1) It's a lot easier to participate in shooting events if you own a gun. Kind of like golfing, it's easier with the right equipment.
2) Hunting is still a legal way to help fill the family freezer. A gun has been known to make it easier to hunt.
3) Personal protection ... there I said it! Sometimes the only way you can be sure of living to see tomorrow is to have the tools to protect yourself.
4) Sometimes it's more humane to kill an injured animal then to let it suffer ... there's my gun again!
5) Have you ever tried to negotiate with a hungry or angry animal? How about a sick wild animal ... neither have I, but I have protected my self and my family by shooting a couple of them.
6) If you run a livestock farm, you have pastures ... if you have pastures you have burrowing animals making holes in the pastures. These holes can injure your stock. A couple of grand to replace a cow, or $.50 for bullet, the choice is yours!
Need any more reasons? How about it's my constitutional right in the USA! |

I would WANT to own a firearm (Actually, I own five of them) for many reasons, and other answerers have already listed them above, so I won't repeat them.
As a true American, I also feel that it is my responsibility, my DUTY to own weapons & keep myself reasonably proficient with them.
It's funny... most people that are of the mindset that 'nobody should have them' are the ones that have never even seen a real one, let alone had it in their hands & fired one. You should try it; go to a range and spend a couple dollars & have a the rangemaster give you a few quick lessons. You'll be surprised that it is actually fun, challenging and; so long as you can follow a few simple rules; very, very SAFE.
The simple act of owning a weapon makes your house & neighborhood safer. In EVERY case where weapons laws have been relaxed; violent crime & burglaries have dropped dramatically. In EVERY case where weapons laws have been tightened & made difficult for the citizen to own & carry one (Australia, UK, Canada, Washington DC) Burglary & violent crime, including murder, has skyrocketed. It's quite simple; criminals prefer unarmed victims.
And finally, the second amendment on the bill of rights guarantees that I can, and un-exercised rights will become lost rights. That is that.

Personally, I enjoy target practice.
But people have a lot of other reasons such as self-defense and hunting. |

If some breaks into my place I have the absolute right to defend my self and my family with a firearm. I will not curl up in a closet and pray the intruder does stab my wife to death. The police will tale 15 minutes to respond, I would put to hollow points in the guys chest within seconds. |

Hunting or competition. people say self defense alot but they never seemed to of got in a fight when they didnt have a gun. plus theres also the shotgun in your household that people like to have if they think someone broke in. i do have a few guns but i shoot for competition not for self defense. i might go hunting someday too. |

Some may need it in the event the cops can't show up in time after dialing 9-1-1 while a hostile and violent person is physically walking over that piece of paper. |

Why wouldn't you? If you don't like guns, then someone trying to force you to have one is about the same as someone trying to force us not to.
Everyone's covered all the reasons, the most important of which is...to stay alive. |

There is only one real reason that some needs a gun and i completely disagree with kill some one and i hate how that they are so widely available in the states i think all should be banned an destroyed guns are made to kill people and do so every day and every hour of every day |
