A couple of years ago I was given a ticking off by a police officers who had a 999 call to my friends house [where I was] as we were putting blocks of wood in the road [stupid I know] the guys parents were there so we were not arrested, they said that had we been older we would have had to pay a fine, they ticked us off and took down my name and address, we did not have to sign anything nor did they say what we were getting, i understand it was some sort of warning. I am now applying for work experience at the foreign office and I require security clearance. I have two main questions, will what i recieved come up, is it on file and if it does will I fail security clearance, what will be the consequences? pleace answer only on things you have degree of certainty about, i am however incredibly grateful for any contribution. It took place in wandsworth

There is one thing that should be mentioned here that hasn't been. If you have a pattern of mischievious behavior at school or in your neighborhood, that will come out in a background investigation. Its not just the police records that get checked, many background checks include a search of school disciplinary records as well as interviews with neighbors, friends, and relatives. If there is any unsavory dirt they are likely to dish out about you, then your chances of getting rejected in the background process are increased. So remember, it's not just getting caught, it's what other people know about you too. |

This is no worse than being told off by your parents. Had the police wanted to take it seriously they would have arrested you and called your parents.
The reason they took your name and address was just in case you caused damage that was later found out and then they would have known where to find you.
Only formal warnings are recorded informal warnings are intended to try to scare you into behaving yourself and it has obviously worked!
So calm down, it is not something you have to worry about or even declare because there will be no record of it. |

Informal verbal warnings are not recorded. (There isn't enough paper in the world).
If you had to go to the police station to receive a formal warning, or if you got a written warning it might appear on your record. A potential employer would then need to take a view about whether someone who got up to mischief at 13 is a security hazard. |

You should be OK as long as you were'nt Cautioned,or Charged with any offence, mind you they may have different rules for Wandsworth. |

You should pass with no problems.
They are unlikely to go to the level of interviewing friends and family for work experience, aged 15!
The conversation with the police is unlikely to be on record. I can't imagine it will come up on a security clearance check for work experience. If you were applying specifically to MI5 or MI6 that might be a different matter!
If the unlikely event you did fail, then you would probably not be allowed to work at the Foreign Office. On the other hand, if you do fail... you're better off knowing early on not to apply for many other government jobs that require security clearance! |

this sounds like an unofficial warning, happens all the time to young people and i wouldn't worry about it,also,it will have nothing to do with your getting security clearance as no file would have opened on this incident |

it might come up but it shouldn't affect your chances if thats the only thing on your record. |

If you were taken to the staion you would have had 'formal written caution', that didn't happen so I cannot see any problems in that respect , and Good Luck! |

No arrest, no adjudication (court trial), no sweat. I've done LOTS worse, including convictions, and passed federal Secret security clearance. |

Putting blocks of wood in the road is an offence under the Road Traffic Act which is imprisonable. If you did that now, under the Government's National Crime Recording Standards, a crime would have been recorded and as they were aware you had done it, it's likely at the very least, you'd have an "Admin Detection" recorded against your name. Whilst not a conviction this may be revealed in a Criminal Records Bureau search. If the Officers felt it necessary, they could have arrested you, you would have been interviewed and using a marking 'matrix', it is likely you would have been given a 'Reprimand'. Had it been more serious or a second offence you would likely receive a 'Final Warning'. You would have to agree to either of these courses of events as they are an admission of guilt. If they didn't arrest you but chose to report you for summons, it's likely that you would have still have been given a Reprimand due to the Public Interest Test not being met. As you received no further contact, it is likely you met with a good old fashioned cop with a bit of common sense who clearly saw that a few words would suffice. Whatever happens, you are not applying for a job so it makes no difference anyhow. You could apply to your local police force for a record of all the information they hold about you. That would clear the matter up for you once and for all. |

if this was only a verbal warning then it will not affect any security clearance. however its always best policy to come forward with any convictions etc |
