Will a law degree (JD) help you get promoted quicker in a Police Department?

I finished law school in December 2008. I went because I wanted to be a US Marshall or FBI. When I applied they told me I need more work experience. So I am applying to a local police department, I think this could be very rewarding work but I never considered it because I thought the money was terrible. Well, the first 3-4 years the money is terrible. But the salary is pretty decent once you make detective and even better as you move up from there.

My question is: Say I wanted to stick with a local PD...do you think a JD will help me get promoted quickly past patrolman or is promotion based on who you know/time in grade?

Yes, a law degree will assist with promotions, especially on a larger department.

However, promotions are also determined by job capability, job interest, and your job performance.
