Will getting "Certified" as a cop through the community college give me any advantages?

The way I understood it before was that first police departments hire and then they train you in all you need. Then, I found out that you can also, at least in this town, take the training to be certified as a cop at the community college. It's a reputable school and it seems like it is part of the program that the local PD uses.
Now, I'm interested, cause I can not apply to be a cop for another year, but I think I can take these classes.
Would most police departments hire me more quickly if I'm certified? Would being certified already allow me to skip academy in any cases? Some Sheriff's departments advertise that they want certified recruits. Is this what they mean or do they mean already experienced cops? Would taking law enforcement classes on my own dime make me a better candidate for federal law enforcement?
Since I really want to do law enforcment, but can't apply for another year, is there any real advantage to getting a head start in training? Or... should I just wait and start from scratch?

Some community colleges have a state POST-certified academy that you can apply for and take/complete without having being hired and have an agency put you through... The down side is you have to pay for it. Make sure it's the academy program, though, and not an AA/AS in criminal justice - two different things.
If you've already received your basic academy certificate (meaning you've graduated from the academy), agencies are typically more willing to pick you up, becasue they don't have to shell out the money for your education - and you've shown initiative by completing it yourself.
Experienced officers are usually considered as "lateral hires....", meaning they already have gone through their probationary period and have received their Basic POST certificate (which is different than a Basic Academy certificate).

Never heard of a college giving a person a "cop" certificate. Most agencies will either hire you and then send you to POST training or else pick you up if you';re already POST certified. |

Yes, being certified will help you get hired. Many agencies will hire a certified Officer over an uncertified one any day. It takes time and money to train new Officers. If you are already certified then they can hire you and put you into FTO without worrying about certifying you.
EDIT:
In North Carolina Community Colleges run a BLET program (Basic law Enforcement Training) which is needed in order to become a Police Officer. So yes there is a such thing as a college giving you a "cop certificate". I teach part time for one such program. Larger agencies in NC host their own BLET programs. |
