Its up to the district attorney to charge you with the crime and the grand jury desides if there is enough evidense for a trial on serious offenses like the ones your talking about .But if the law has been broken pity or not its their duty to make an arrest on the spot. |

i'm sure they would let you off for pity but if you killed your whole family not many people would pity you |

Not usually, in your hypothetical case never, even if it was your own family. Its not the police officers job to judge. That the courts job. |

Police have discretion with some issues. They can warn you or arrest you. If the police catch you doing something stupid they can send you on your way.
In cases of death or a victim with financial of physical injury its up to the courts to show you mercy. |

Depending on the law on that province/state and on the judges and the jury and what's the real cause of the accident. that's why there's a case to the court because every scenario is different. |

If you "caused an accident that killed your entire family" you better not be let off! You need to be punish by law for being so stupid and thoughtless. Otherwise, people would be killing their families and asking for pity parties to get out of trouble. No deal. |

Ever?
Sure. And I have.
But if people are dead because of your actions, you're not likely to be let "off the hook" for that.
I've given people breaks when they have pretty believable stories about why they've done what they've done, or can't do something they're supposed to, but it's generally over a minor issue like speeding or having a headlight out. I've given people breaks for driving on a suspended license, though sometimes that break is not taking them to jail, not towing their car, or citing them for something less than being suspended. |

If you caused the accident normally they have requirements to write a ticket for the person at fault, and always write the report showing who caused the accident.
Actually if you are hurt and sent to the hospital, they have been known to forget to issue you a ticket. |

In this case, you would probably be charged with Vehicular Homicide for killing your whole family with your car. I don't think any law enforcement officer could let you off even if they wanted to. When someone dies, they pretty much have to turn any evidence over to the State Attorney's for prosecution. |

I was caught doing 88 in a 65 zone. The state trooper let me go because I told him (truthfully) that I was on my honeymoon & we had been having terrible luck, had been rained on in 3 states the same day.... |

FIRST WHAT STATE ARE YOU IN, THAT DEPENDS ALOT ON THE OUTCOME. I AM A FELON. I UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS OUT THERE. DID YOU HAVE TO DO COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR THE CHARGE. IF YOU HAVE AND YOU DID WELL, YOU HAVE DEVELOPED PERSONAL REFERENCES THAT YOU COULD POSSIBLY USE IN THE SEARCH FOR EMPLOYMENT. ALSO, I HAVE FOUND IF YOU ARE UPFRONT, AND WHEN FILLING OUT APPLICATIONS WRITE PLEASE ASK ME ON THE LINE THAT ASKS YOU, YOU CAN FIND COMPASSIONATE PEOPLE THAT WILL LISTEN. SOME WON'T. YOU CAN CALL THE PROBATION DEPARTMENT IN YOUR TOWN AND ASK THEM IF ANY OF THE EMPLOYERS IN THE AREA WILL GET A TAX BREAK FOR YOUR HIRE. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO JUST GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR AND PROVE YOURSELF TO SOMEONE. MY STATE HAD A PROGRAM TO PAY EMPLOYERS SO MUCH PER PERSON THAT HAD A CRIMINAL HISTORY SO THAT FOLKS LIKE US COULD GET WORK. HANG IN THERE AND IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS ASK AWAY. |
