With all the street crime in London, is it time to introduce New York style Zero Tolerance?

James i have lived here all of my life and there's a huge difference.

Edit Jason what they don;t seem to realise is the ages of those killed most are just kids. And you would never get the level of crime against the all the emergency services that you do now. How can anyone understand kids chucking rocks at fire engines, as someone said why don't they turn the hoses on them, though i guess the little toerags would go to the European Court of Human Rights if hurt. Even Funeral Processions are reporting levels of crime previously unheard of.

A few "brave" Chief Constables have tried before (Hartlepool springs to mind), but they immediately got "slapped down" by the PC "Do-Gooder" Brigade and New Labour !!

"Zero" tollerance, "Real" sentencing and "Real" prisons (not hotels) are the only answer !!

Ray Mallon from Teeside tried it and it worked, but all the lawyers saw the damage he was doing to their cosy lifestyle they had him removed.

We already have a similar style of policing in Glasgow and Edinburgh. It has helped a great deal, particularly in Edinburgh (where overall crime has gone down by 15% in the past year), although I'm not so sure about Glasgow.

Perhaps the police in London should be taking tips from the Lothian and Borders force rather than the New York police.

The Singaporeans have a similar system - they even have hundreds of plain clothes litter police.
Drop a matchstick or a piece of gum and you could have a heavy hand on your shoulder and an on the spot fine.
If a street crime goes to Court you could end up with the lash as well.

Yes. But it should be UK wide. The scumbags should be given HARSH punishments. Punishments that HURT. Punishments that make people wish they'd NEVER chosen a life of crime.

All what street crime in London? Lived here since 1999, and there seems no more and no less than is usual. In fact, I would say there is less.

Edit: James M only lived in London since 1999, I have lived in London all my life, Last year there was 27 murders either by gun or knife, this year so far there have been 5 murders, and you spout that it is no worse. get out into the real world.

It is certainly time to end the liberal view our Government seems to have on knife and gun crime as it has clearly failed. They can bleat on all they want about how "crime rates have fallen over 10 years" as street crime is still a serious problem.

The New York policy was extremely effective, going at grassroots crime first and then leading on to higher level criminal activity. The drop in crime was excellent and this Zero tolerance policy seriously needs to be considered here in the UK.

I don't think the UK can learn anything from a country where murders are recorded in thousands and police killed on duty in hundreds.

Immigration is the problem with London. If you sent back all of the immigrants that have arrived in London in the last ten years crime would drop by 50% overnight.
