If a family was on vacation and got robbed. Would the cops waste their time actually going throught the finger prints at the station.. Or do they just take them to make the home owners feel like somethings really being done?

I can only speak for my agency. We look at every fingerprint card that comes in. In fact I'm the one that does it.
There are relatively few useful fingerprints that do come in, however. The number of suspect prints are even fewer due to a lot of the ones brought in are in actuality the victim's.
While we'd like to make the homeowners feel good about what we do, we'd really like to make the thieves feel really, really bad. |

I know they take the prints but I suspect it's more for show than for any real follow up. My home was burglarized, the cops went through the motions and once they left I never heard from them again. And I understand that a follow up on a home burglary is low priority for a big city police force. But still.... |

uhhhhh..............the proper thing to do if this is a real home invasion/burglary would be to gather evidence including fingerprints at the scene. |

Before AFIS we used to call it throwing around some dust to make 'em happy.
In the 20 years since AFIS if the officer on the scene of any burglary does not call for an evidence tech he has to get approval from a sergeant. We are not getting more usable prints on the scene but those we do get are easily and quickly checked against both knows and open cases (no prints on identity file but unknown prints found at other scenes)

Yes. They take them.
That way if a burglar is caught committing a different crime, their prints are compared with the prints taken at other crime scenes. |
