Would there be a big market for this security device? Would it be fully legal?

My latest engineering projects are all in the security field. Specifically, area security for smaller consumers. For example, a mega-corporation can afford lots of complex security systems, but smaller businesses or agencies often cannot. My goal is to make security systems that are cheap and affordable but still high-quality.
Right now, my plan is to take advantage of ever-cheaper millimeter-wave radar components to build a passive-scan interlock system to prevent armed people from entering a given area.
Basically, it would be a pair of revolving doors. You enter through the first door, and then the millimeter-wave radar scans you and under your clothes for contraband or firearms. If the computer identifies anything that fits the profile of a weapon, the door shoves you back out into the street. If you are cleared, the second revolving door lines up with the first, and you can pass.
The advantage of this system is that it can be made completely AUTOMATIC - it is based entirely on heuristics. No human monitoring required.
But what are the legal issues? For example, it would keep out EVERYONE with a firearm on his or her person. Including police officers.
But then again, who's to say the officer has good intentions while entering? We all remember the case of Officer Antoinette Frank in New Orleans. Sometimes you might have an absolute need to keep people with firearms out of a certain area, law enforcement or not, until they can obtain a judicial warrant.
Do you think there would be a lot of customers for this type of system if the purchase/install price can be kept under $100,000 or so?

WOW!!! That sounds like one fantastic system! I am sure I wouldn't be the first to say that if I had a buisness, that I would really want that system.
However, if it prevents law officers from entering the public place, then I would not think it would be legal. Also, think of the marketablility. Who wouldn't want to permit law enforcement into the establishment. I think that would be a big turn off legal or not.
The best way to find out ( because I am sure things vary, state to state ) is to call your local police office, and ask them. They should all be well in tune with the law. |

I really don't think anyone would want that when they can get a $12 an hour security guard with a $129.99 handheld metal detector |

$12 24/7 for a year would be more than $100,000. There could be some buildings that would desire 24 hour access. (Maybe banks, pawn shops, check cashing, convience stores in bad neigborhoods, post offices)
The door shouldn;t push, the second door should meerly not open. It will have to be designed so a second person can;t enter before the person ahead either enters the second door, or returns through the turnstill.
The building will need emergency fire exits and ways for fire department to override in order to get into the building in the event of a fire. you'll want to examine alot of firecode around the country to ensure that your design will comply with standards |

Honestly, you don't want to create a device that may injure someone, and the fact that the door could push someone back outside may cause an injury. Imagine the law suit that would be on your hands if that revolving door pushed a trigger inside of the suspects pocket causing the weapon to go off on them? You'd be finished!! You don't want that kind of liability. You sound hella smart though. Keep tweeking your idea. |

I think your development price may be a lot higher than you estimate. Your going to have to spend a lot to show that it does not do physical harm. Both FDA and FCC will have to be satisfied. The smaller the wave the better the internal heating.
Then there is the local safety laws on egress. It might be OK to lock someone out but while they are locked out others cannot leave in case of emergency.
In my (and most) city all licensed businesses must give immediate access to police officers to the premises. Your system would prevent that.
Wasn't Frank already working as a private security guard at the place she shot up in the mid 90's? Your system would not have prevented someone in the building already with a key to the locked side door. So adding that is kind of a non sequiter. Outside of N.O. and police administrators who use the case to show that politicians should stay out of hiring I doubt if anyone remembers the case. |
