Would you sell your soul to become a police officer?
|
My husband at 36 years old now wants to become a police officer, which has been his passion since his teen years. His uncle is a tenured officer in our local police department, but instead of helping him get in, he offered him this... His uncle's "buddy" who is a Background Investigator with the same department, just bought a new house. Since my husband does remodeling work, his uncle told his buddy that perhaps he can "pass his papers through" if my husband remodels his house (for free basically). I immediately had bad thoughts about this so-called "offer". I'd rather my husband have some pride and work hard to get in the department, than selling his soul to someone. Other issues I was concerned with was, what if the guy didn't like his work, then never got him in.? What if he then bad-mouths him to his superior so he gets fired? How long would he be indebted to this guy for "handing him a career"?
Now my husband is bummed because he thinks he's never going to become a police officer. I feel horrible because I told him to turn down the offer. Was I wrong? Should he have done this? Additional Details He doesn't need help and doesn't have problems passing the background. He was actually disqualified by another agency for being "too clean". They don't believe he's never done drugs. My husband's a good guy and they think he's lying.
The reason he would "appreciate" getting help getting in is because he's closing his business and we're barely surviving off my salary. The sooner he can get in the better.
Anyway, thank you for all your answers. I feel better about my decision.

You were right. This guy is actually breaking the law. he is extorting him already. I wouldn't want to be indebted to a dishonest cop, or anyone else for that matter, but especially not someone that has power to make your life very hard. Evidently that's what it takes in that field..selling your soul. If it was this situation it would have been another sooner or later.
Good for you for having the good sense. |

Definitely sounds like a scam, your husband would probably end up doing the remodeling, and once he's done his uncle's buddy would just refuse to "pass his papers through". Your husband wouldn't be able to sue because the agreement was crooked in the first place; I had a friend who was in a similar situation and got screwed over in the end.
Nothing in life is free, so if your husband wants to be a police officer I'd suggest he do it through the legitimate channels. |

I think you made a good call... just sounds weird to me.. tell him to start looking for a decent academy, go through the training and when he's done they will help him find a job |

Sounds like a con to me. If in this day and time that is all he has to be bummed about, give him a swift kick in the butt. |

If he's doing that kind of work for the guy, I'd say he doesn't owe him anything after that. Naturally the job will have to be done to the other guys' satisfaction.
He probably can't get him fired once he has the job. You're talking about a union, government job. You'd have to murder six of your coworkers (while on the clock) to get fired. Ok, maybe it's not that hard to get fired, but you get the point :) |

No offense, but why would your hubby need help passing a background investigation? If he is able to pass it on his own, then the only thing this guy is doing for him is just speeding up the process (ie, moving his paperwork to the top of the list of other applicants). Even if he passes the background check, there is no guarantee of a job, so what exactly is this guy really doing for him? I'd say it's a scam by his uncle to get a buddy some free carpentry work. |

Sounds like your husband has had problems applying for departments, tell him to keep applying and taking this guys offer will mostly not work, the "process" of becoming a police officer isn't exactly that simple. So what if this guy puts a good word in, and gets his papers pushed through, this guy and can be a total dips h i t and ruin things for the both of you. |
