Y was the officer confused when my friend plead the fifth?

The Amendment basically states that you can't be tried twice for the same crime against the same person and you can't be put in prison or other form of punishment unless you have been before a court. The officer wasn't confused, he was probably wondering why your friend was pleading the fifth when obviously he couldn't due to the fact that it only covers you in court.

trooper is correct...there is no reason for your friend to "plead the 5th". The cop wasnt confused, he probably thought to himself "wow this kid is a moron. I'm not in the mood for this today, my shift is over in a half hour."

Because your friend had no Fifth Amendment rights at the time. The Fifth Amendment applies to the courtroom, not during a traffic stop.

The actual text reads "nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself".

Im not a cop like the last guy that answerd but this I know for a fact you always have you're fith amendment rights wich states that you have the right not to answer on the grounds that it may be self incriminating.you never have to speak to a officer without a lawer present.If you get pulled over for a traffic stop i advise to be nice and tell the truth to cop but you absolutley do not have to say a word to him but your name address .You do have to produce id if asked but not anymore.For a simple stop though I would be friendly and truthfull I have found in over thirty years of driving truck and getting pulled over more than my fair share that the first words out your mouth and your attitude determine if and how bad you are going to be hammered.I can honestly say that I never recieved a ticket I did not recieve.
As far as the officer being confused I doubt that he was confused he probably was a little taken back by it being a traffic stop and all.When you say you want to take the fifth you are realy saying i am guilty and realy dont want to talk to you about it ,or at least that is always my impression when ive seen people do it in court.
