Before I buy a new car and drive off with it - I called my insurance company and let them know.

However, I have been told by State Farm that they will automatically cover you for a day or two until you call them.

Contact your insurance company and see if they do that as well. If so, you may be able to get that ticket thrown out.

Your insurance company that you had previously should have insured you for the drive. You did contact them at the dealer, right?

You should be able to straighten this out by getting togehter with your insurance company. You will need to obtain proof from them that you were insured and then go to court.

BTW...you shouldn't have been speeding.

The sad fact of life is that you did something in the wrong order. Buying a car without proof of insurance handy is a serious problem. Lesson: Plan your purchases better. You could have called your insurance carrier for a special-case certificate to arrange for temporary insurance pending the formal transfer of insurance from your old car to your new car. You could have asked the dealer how to obtain temporary insurance. Believe it or not, if Esurance operates in that state, you could have obtained a printout that would suffice just by using the dealer's computer and phone call to the Esurance toll-free number.

But you did none of those things and got busted for being - sorry to say it - a bit dumb. Plan ahead and this stuff won't happen to you.

If you had insurance at the time you got the ticket, send a copy to the court. If not, get insurance now, pay the fine and the will reinstate your license.

If you drive a vehicle on the roadway, it MUST be insured. If you had an accident pulling out of the car lot, you would have been responsible. Every vehicle that I have bought had to be insured before the car lot would let me leave in it. The bottom line is that you should not have driven the car without insurance.

You should have contacted your insurance agent prior to transporting the car home. Sometimes, if you carry proof of insurance in your name, even if on another vehicle, it will cover the new purchase while driving home. Without proof of insurance WITH YOU while driving, the ticket is legitimate.
Suggestion: take proof of insurance to your attorney, and have him help you straighten this out. You didn't say what state you were in, and states differ in the law. Good luck.

I agree with old in fact if it was a reputable dealership they wouldnt have even given you the keys without proof of insurance. You can get insurance now and take it to them and beg ignorance of this and hope they take pity on you and reverse it all but that however is very unlikely.

Any time I buy a new car, I call my insurance company to let them know when I will be driving that car off the lot and give them all the necessary information.

IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE.

Explain to the judge, but really I would not even drive 2 blocks without ins. here in los angeles. You could get into an accident and be sued by the other party. If they win they will take your car, your wages, and everything else. In short ins. protects you the driver from the other idiots on the road.

Having proof of insurance is the same as having a valid drivers license. You want to drive on public roads, have both documents. Oh yea, slow down and you won't have to talk to cops.
