how long does it take for police to track counterfeit money made in their local area to it's source?

the one who made the bills gave them to people who then gave it to other people who then would have spent it and possibly had it reported. it was no more than 10 counterfeit 10 dollar bills. if the people at the end did report the money would the police be obligated to act? or would they pass it along to the secret service to deal with right away?

The police may notify the Secret Service but unless there is a major influx of counterfeit bills, or some high quality ones, little to no investigation will probably happen. At worse, someone who is caught with a counterfeit bill will be questioned and possibly charged with possession of it if there's proof that they knew or should have known that it was counterfeit.
But unless one gets Federal probation, one typically does ALL of their Federal prison sentence. Which is what one usually gets with counterfeiting money.

The police do not investigate counterfeiting unless someone is caught with a counterfeit bill. The Secret Service handles those investigations.

Most bills never get traced to a source. And, nobody is going to investigate $100 worth of counterfeit bills.

Do they ever actually track it to it's source ? Unless the counterfeiter is stupid and trying to pass a lot of bad fakes himself . If we're talking about a large amount of fakes I'm sure they will make it a top priority though. I worked in retail, I've seen a lot of fake bills, and never saw a single arrest. I would assume many of the people who try to spend them have no idea they are counterfeit.
