Well.... Your probably best to keep your head down. The last thing the cops need is a person they don't know swinging another gun around. Look at it from their point of view. They don't know you from Adam, and your shooting. Legally, yes you can in most states. In fact in most states you are required to help an officer in distress if you have the ability to do so. But it's probably not the best idea. You may get shot to because nobody knows who's side you are shooting for. If you thought you could do it safely, I would think you could make a very fast benefit/risk assessment and decide the best course of action.

Edit: Exactly dude. But beware the officer seeing you shooting in his general direction. He'll be very stressed. The risk assesment is "what am i risking to gain the benefit". Sometimes it's not worth it, sometimes it is. Very slim chance this will ever happen. I think its funny how everyone is pulling the "corrupt cop" card out. Really people this isn't the movies. Less than 1/3 of 1% of officers sully their badge. that's better than any clergy in any church. If you obey the law that the people YOU vote into office to make those laws, you don't have anything to worry about. And if you back up a cop not knowing the situation, the law will take your side of judging the officer to be in the right.

Legal or not, I wouldnt advise it. If officers are already engaging a suspect, it would be VERY easy for them to mistake you for one too.

Don't shoot unless the suspect has killed the officer and their are no other officers around then only if the suspect is a direct threat to your life as well.

The chances of you witnessing something like this is about one in a billion. Even if you were that one in a billion person you do not have the training to get involved in law enforcement activities. Stay the heck out of the way.

You are NOT permitted to use deadly force except in the defense of yourself of others. If you use deadly force in the defense of others, YOU must prove that the person you shot was in the wrong. This means if a corrupt cop is trying shooting the wrong person, and you get involved, you are guilty of MURDER. You would be BEGGING for trouble.

That would be very extreme behavior on your part. And just how are the police to know that you aren't one of the bad guys? How do you know the police are justified shooting at any person? Also shooting another human being does affect the subconscious,. There are people who after shooting someone for whatever reason, even though justified, have later committed suicide themselves. It's wise to avoid shooting anyone, if you are able to.

Vigilantism is illegal.

In most states shooting a gun off within a certain distance of buildings is illegal.

If you are shooting a gun off, more than likely the police will shoot you because they will think you are shooting at them.

So you will probably get screwed.
