I will be getting my concealed carry permit so this question will be moot by then but I was just wondering if anybody knew this. under the law here in washington you can carry a gun in your car if it is unloaded. loaded you have to have a concealed carry permit. ok so I don't have one and I can go shooting up in the mountains if I transport the gun unloaded. but, does it matter if it is concealed hidden in the car in any way? say under a coat? or does it have to be in a case and visible? I got pulled over by a sheriff and I had the gun unloaded in it's case, but hidden from view under a coat. should I have told him? I had a cardboard box with bullet holes in it sitting in the back seat which he looked at and he asked me what I was doing up there, I told him sightseeing. I thought he might get all paranoid if I told him I had a gun in the car, even if unloaded. I read something about how it has to be in sight, out in the open and you should tell the officer, but in this case I thought he doesn't need to know. was I wrong?

I read the washington state laws and all they talk about is laws pertaining to people who do have concealed weapons permits and nothing much on what to do if you don't but are transporting a gun. just that it has to be unloaded, but nothing about whether it has to be in view or not, or in the trunk or not, etc. it talks about how if you leave a gun in the car, and you have a concealed weapon permit, it must be locked and hidden from view. nothing about what to do if you don't have the CWP
and the whole issue of whether to tell an officer, they all again talk about yes if you have the permit, you should tell him first thing, but nothing about if you dont' have the permit.

Technically, you got away with one.
FWIW, it's NOT against the law to transport your firearm unloaded & locked in the trunk. Until you get your CCW permit, I'd advise you to transport your gun unloaded & in the trunk. It does not need to be locked in a case.
Once you have your CCW permit, you MUST advice an officer of the location of your weapon at first contact of a traffic stop. |

6) Tell the officer that YOU HAVE A FIREARM IN YOUR VEHICLE OR ON YOU!!
THE OFFICER WILL BE NOT AS NERVOUS IF YOU ARE HONEST!!!! IF YOU LYE THE RESPONSE YOU GET WILL NOT BE PLEASANT GUARANTIED
You will be placed under arrest and be charged with a felony, which Then you will never ever be able to carry own or be around any ammunition or firearms.
So please be honest tell the officer what you have. It may safe your life!!!!
So to answer your question yes it matters if you have it concealed in any way loaded or not you can not have it in your reach or concealed in any way!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I am not sure the details of Washington state law on the issue. In some states, your method of transport is legal. In others it is not. I CAN say with certainty that COMPETENT police officers don't panic when someone tells them they have a weapon. It is the people that DON'T say they have a weapon that are dangerous. |
