what about public places, private places (does the owner have the right to chop off my bike lock)? can i just lock it to anything? does anyone really care?

That is what a bike rack is for. Public property will have bike racks for you to use. If you put it on someones private property, then yes, they can dispose of your bike as they choose. |

I pretty much have to since most of the shopping areas in town do not provide much if any bike racks though they are getting better at it. |

If its on private property the property owner has the right to remove it at any time, posts or not. If the property owner provides a bike rack for such parking and then still removes it and has it impounded be prepared for civil litigation to prove your bike was not left for an extended lenghth of time and you did business with them so it can be returned to you. If its on public property (i.e. a sidewalk chained to a city light pole) kinda s.o.l. if the police impound it. You will be liable for impound fees and the ticket. Laws may vary city to city. |
