No, this is no a double standard. They are paid to protect you and that means protecting themselves, as well. I still think that it is amazing that they can do their jobs without carrying guns, like they do here in the US.

They have been trained to use them.
The job they do would put them in a situation they need thease things if you are in a situation you need thease things you can call them. You could allways join the police force if you want to spray people with cs gas. Not much of a double standard, I for one dont feel cheated out of a basic human right.

This is a very dangerous situation. Civilians are being disarmed and are not even allowed to have a knife in their back garden (at a barbeque). The police and military will use their full armoury of lethal weapons (including tasers) against civilians and the brave will have very little to fight back with and there will be mass slaughter.

They are trained when and how to use them. We are not. OK there are time when they go OTT but in the main we are safer not going around armed with batons and pepper spray. Imagine a road rage with two drivers with batons. How long before they carry knives as the norm?

the police are the POLICE.........you are not. not everybody lives by the same rules, the police carry weapons because its part of a police officers job.

why do paramedics get to go around sticking IV's in people if you aren't allowed to? how come the garbage man is allowed to chuck garbage cans around and hang off a garbage truck, but you can't? how come firemen get to use axes to bash their way into houses, and you can't?

As well as the other answers. They have to under go training to use the equipment safely. If they are found to have misused the equipment .
Then they are disciplined although some one will make the usual anti-police remarks it does happen.

The Police are allowed to carry these things because they are in more danger of being attacked than any individual member of the public when out of the streets. This is because:

a) Criminals will target them as a way of reducing law and order
b) It is the police's job to get involved in situations with criminals where there is a serious risk of harm to their person.

Also, the Police need to be known to be well protected and somewhat armed, to encourage respect and obediance for the police.

Do you know how easily a person could be killed with a baton if the person wielding it hasn't been properly trained? Very easily.
As for the CS or Pepper Spray, I personally don't see why an ordinary person shouldn't be allowed to carry it.

You should come move to the U.S. ~ Arizona, New Mexico, Texas or the other southern states all have really good laws when it comes to arming yourself. Some areas even allow concealed carry permits. =)

All your question says to me is, that you want the right to carry weaponry because you aim to go where there is bound to be trouble.
Otherwise there is no reason to carry it. The police need it to subdue idiots who do carry weapons and to protect you from them also.
There is a case for them to have guns. Then, instead of struggling with dangerous drunks and to try to use non life threatening gear, they could just shoot them....................................â€¦
