A question about Unions?
|
It has been argued on Y!A and other places that Unions and labor laws are necessary, and without them businesses and government would just take advantage of poor workers. Unflagging support of labor unions is one of the dozen or so reasons I strongly opposed Obama during the campaign, and that I strongly oppose him today. In theory, I guess they are a good thing - but -
For those of you who support them and think they're a good idea - what do you think about this story?
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jUqS3jxNsFKKsJmNG0sG0dWf7k9gD9FTV2F80
In New York City, bus drivers who are spat upon by riders are given an AVERAGE of six month's paid leave. SIX MONTHS! Don't you think that's a little excessive?
Being spat upon is assault - it is an awful, humiliating, demeaning act and the people who do it should be arrested and prosecuted, but SIX MONTHS? How much trauma can that be?
Meanwhile, the Transit Workers Union crippled the city in 2005, holding it hostage while it "negotiated" early retirement at 50, pay raises, extended benefits, full pensions - do any of you have this?
I am paying for this every day - with every ride of the subway, with every ride on a bus I take. The cost of this goes up - and guess what - the MTA is BANKRUPT! They need a bailout!
Do you think it's right that the MTA go on strike to get better benefits and salaries than most New Yorkers, presumably because they have the power to shut us down, and then make us pay every single day for those benefits by increased fares? Further, as awful as getting spit upon must be, can you possibly justify six months paid leave for the trauma? How much of an extra fare would that be worth to you? How many cuts in service do you think this leave is worth - do you think maybe we could all pay an extra 50 cents per ride, and maybe send them on a cruise?
If you had the choice, what part of your Federal Income tax would you allocate to a bailout of the MTA, knowing how well it treats its workers and its Union bosses?
What possible service is the Union doing but enriching the bosses and helping the members game the system?

There was a time and place for unions, but that has long since passed. There were necessary when people went to work for a company their entire working life, and the companies in turn screwed them over. Unions were good to make sure that the companies repaid the loyalties of the workers.
Times have changed. It's very rare to find someone that works for the same company their entire working life. The average person changes jobs every few years. Companies have learned to deal with this by offering incentives to hire good people and keep them working there. Why would a company try to screw over a good worker when that worker can go to a different job that respects his work more?
But, unions have not changed with the times, and still operate under the misguided thinking that company is going to pay everyone minimum wage if the union wasn't there. In reality, though, all they are doing is causing the prices and our taxes to go up by their demands. Our local teachers went on strike a few years ago because the new contract would have had them pay a copay with their medical insurance (like a majority of people already do). So they go on strike for this and other items. The result? At a time the school district was scrambling to find money, they now had to pay more for the teachers. This resulted in one of the schools being closed and some of the teachers laid off (both resulting in larger class sizes), not to mention the school's budget still suffering (which resulted in a referendum that passed and increased property taxes). |

I have issues with unions, but I do believe they are a good thing. The problem is that the union workers are at the mercy of the union leaders that are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and have access to cars, petty cash, etc... that the union members are paying for. |

Before unions the top 2 percent of the country held ALL the power. With unions the workers got a little of that back. Even people who are not in unions benefit. If it wasn't for unions there would be on employer health plans, vacation days, and sick days. You can thank unions for all that. Yes they have issues and they can be corrupt, but so can anything else ran by humans. |
