I'm having a debate in english in a few days about capital punishment and whether it should be legal or not. I'm arguing the negative side, and even though i've written the paper already I'm thinking I should prepare myself for what her arguments might be so I can write a rebuttal. I have the feeling I'd be going on Friday or early next week, so a quick response would be great! thanks in advance :]

On June 30, 2008 —
– 2,310,984 prisoners were held in federal or state prisons or in local jails – an increase of 0.8% from yearend 2007, less than the average annual growth of 2.4% from 2000-2007.
– 1,540,805 sentenced prisoners were under state or federal jurisdiction.
– there were an estimated 509 sentenced prisoners per 100,000 U.S. residents – up from 506 at yearend 2007.
– the number of women under the jurisdiction of state or federal prison authorities increased 1.2% from yearend 2007, reaching 115,779, and the number of men rose 0.7%, totaling 1,494,805.
The data on the number of facilities is more dated. In 2005:
From June 30, 2000, to December 30, 2005, the number
of state and federal correctional facilities increased by
9%, from 1,668 to 1,821. NOTE: this is just state and federal. It does NOT include local jails, but it DOES include private facilities. |

no where near enough prisons there is different types from local to county .. to minimum , medium maximum security// to Federal prisons |

Not sure exactly how many prisons there are, but an interesting fact is that the united states has the highest percentage of it's population incarcerated of any other country in the WORLD.
Basically, we've allowed prisons to become a for-profit industry, and this leads to far more people being incarcerated than what makes sense. |
