No, they should have made it optional to the premises.
i.e. if pub/club wanted to allow it they should do.
Alternatively they should be allowed to have smoking areas. |

no... certain areas should be designated for smokers tho |

Not really. People that go to smoky places know they're that way when they go. It's not the governments job to protect us from every little vice in life! I could choose not to go to smoke filled bars or restaurants if I want but now I don't have the choice to go to one! All these laws do is take away choice and freedom!
non-smoker against the ban right here lula |

Only under a Labour Governent |

Lets face it, with all the Political Correctness brought in by New Labour, smokers are the only minority group that it is still legal to victimise.
I wonder how they stand on illegal immigrants smoking in public places, presumably that is legal! |

Yes. I think smoking should be done in private and smokers who continually drop their butts fined heavily for littering.
Pubs should be smoking or non smoking or rooms set aside for them. |

not sure about what you mean by "public places"
if you mean pubs, then yes. bus stops- not so much.
it's fair in my view to limit smoking in public places to the end that employees have the right to work in a safe atmosphere. Bar staff ought not be exposed to second hand smoke and forced to risk their health. I don't see the harm in smoking on railway platforms, though.
the problem is always drawing a line, and it's never comfortable for everybody. in this case i think they got it just right by not being too lenient on the smokers.
In Germany smoking was banned indoors and then the law was repealed because it was too full of loopholes. so the smokers won that one.
I'm really glad that they pushed the age limit on tobacco up to eighteen aswell. that's totally appropriate. they should do the same with lottery tickets and joining the forces. |

No because all it has achieved is non smokers being left alone inside bars while their friends are out smoking.
In fact i know many non smokers who wish they would bring it back!
They should have the option-if they want to be a smoking bar-then let them.
Don't we live in a democracy? |

No. There should be options for each, and one should know and respect what's going on before entering either. |

i agree with the idea of non smokers having smoke free areas for their use,but because of ash that organisation that dislikes the idea that smokers should enjoy themselves we have no place to go for ourselves, they have achieved more unemployment than that cow thatcher,i cannot understand how it is that the MPs can smoke in the commons restauraunt,i thought we were all equal in the eyes of the law,can an mp if there is one reading any of this answer that question? |

Of course it is right to ban smoking in public places. We all have a right to go into any public space and have a right to breath clean air or as clean as we can these days. It is not a case of well they know smokers are in public areas yes but so are those of us who do not smoke. Why do smokers feel they have a right to smoke where ever they like and those that do not can lump it is that a fair attitude I think not? Smokers have had it their way far too long. I also feel smoking in front of children should be banned and smoking in a vehicle with children is nothing but child abuse the child cannot tell a parent not to smoke and the poor child has to endure the stink from smoking and any side effects that may or may not harm the child’s health. It is not only a health issue but who wants to go out wearing nice cloths use nice smells and come home stinking like an ash tray? |

No, pubs and restaurants are closing because people won't go in if they can't smoke. Smokers have rights just the same as people who don't smoke. |

Yes. Coming from Ireland where the bans been here for a few years it really makes such a difference. It's nice to be able to breathe in public places and not have smoke all around you. And think of the effect 2nd hand smoke has on other people. I don't smoke yet i ended up with a cancerous lump a few years ago. There's a pretty good chance that's because of the smokers around me. Do you want to be responsible for that?
Instead of thinking about how this is harder for yourselves smokers, think about the other people around you who have to breathe in your smoke |

Yes, other people have the right to not be exposed to second hand smoke |

i don't think so. i mean if you know there's a place that allows smoking, and you don't like it, the answer is simple...DON'T GO THERE!
like in bars and stuff, i think you should be free to smoke if you want. and restaurants...i remember the smoking/non smoking sections...it never really bothered me. probably because i grew up with smoking parents. |

Of course. Only a smoker would say otherwise!! Why should someone like myself, an asthmatic, have my evenings out ruined by the damage someone else's disgusting cig smoke is doing to me? Why should I have to go home with my hair and clothes reeking of the stuff (which all smokers reek of, I have to say)? Cigs are KILLERS, not some innocent little hobby that harms no-one. It's bad enough knowingly harming yourself, but expecting other people to suffer the even more
harmful effects of passive smoking is beyond arrogant and outrageous. The sooner smoking is outlawed completely, the better! It must cost the NHS billions to treat smokers - and their innocent victims like my father in law who died of lung cancer caused be breathing in other peoples' smoke for years as a musician. Disgraceful.
SOCAL - Are you suggesting that non-smokers should not be able to go into bars, restaurants, clubs, etc, because you lot are puffing away inside? Now THAT is arrogant! |

The decision to ban smoking in public places was absurd. It would have been much better to ban smoking in the workplace, as they did in Ireland. That means that smoking is banned in every place in which someone works, including bars, restaurants, buses, taxis, delivery vans, trucks, train stations, etc.
Basically this means that the right to not be exposed to second-hand smoke is treated as more important than the right to expose people to second-hand smoke: seems pretty fair to me.
The UK (and other countries') solution is open to interpretation which means it's not a particularly good law. |

I gave up a couple of months before the ban so I'm all for it. I've even found myself wishing they'd ban it in the streets, I hate breathing in other people's smoke. But I do think that might be going a little too far...
I'll be surprised if there are any non smokers that are against the ban. |
