Alcohol versus Cannabis ....?
Find answers to your legal question.

Alcohol versus Cannabis ....?

I agree that cannabis use is dangerous if smoked in large quantities repeatedly, I also believe that alcohol is dangerous if drunk in large quantities repeatedly but which of the two effects society more? As I see it, excessive cannabis abuse leads to mental health problems for the user and excessive alcohol abuse leads to passers-by being kicked to death.
If both are drugs shouldn't both be illegal?

For every controlled social drinker, there is a controlled social cannabis smoker, so siting that as reason for the current law does not wash !

Stephen: Yes but it never made me want to go out and kick the life out of someone, it just made me want to eat - sugar puffs actually.

Have you ever smoked hash?
I'd have to agree with you there, sugar puffs mmmmmm.

Id rather talk to someone who is stoned rather than drunk, less aggression.

Nothing good has ever came from these two drugs. Except for Alice in Wonderland.

Hi Dr Watson

With alcohol, it's the user that's the main problem. When drunk, some men and women, get violent

Drugs cause most problems because of their adiction. The user needs more and commits crimes to fund the habit.

Both are a serious stain on society. On balance, canabis is the nastier of the two

There are many discredited myths about cannabis, and just as many established facts about alcohol.

The problem we have is the drug laws are totally illogical. It costs a fortune to enforce them (with little success), and leads to large numbers of otherwise law-abiding people receiving criminal records.

What people do with their free time, if they are not harming anyone else, should not be the subject of legislation.

I doubt the real Dr Watson would ask for this!

He is a drinker, because red wine is GOOD for health and Holmes is a well known junkie

Alcohol has been with us for a long time, possibly as long as 5000 years, and society has evolved with it. I'm not taking a stand of "Alcohol good, cannabis bad" but no-one so far has cited the FACT that almost all crack and heroin abusers started out taking a puff of the weed. And I have encountered aggression from smokers so I know it's not so innocent as many of it's supporters proclaim.

This debate is one I normally avoid. Many of my friends have smoked hashish for 40 years and more and we've all been to prison for it, yet I never seen any of them behave irresponsibly, I've witnessed much worse behaviour with alcohol. Unfortunately the homegrown stuff now does seem to to be detrimental to young minds, just like alcohol when they don't know their limits. Much of a muchness, but drunks are more threatening.

edit: Yeh, I was cautious too!

from my perspective...being someone who used both at various stages of my life and still witness many who abuse the substances, both can have negative outcomes, although one is by far worse then the other. Though many people look down upon weed, I would never ever say it was worse off then alcohol....ever. I have seen alcohol lead to more violent eruptions and bloody outcomes more times then I wish to remember....on the flip side, I seen weed lead to more fast food cosumption and odd ball observations and theories that I can't quite remember quick enough. Mental health problems....really? Everyone I know who still smokes THC is fairly intelligent as opposed to my liqour guzzling peers....weed either brings out the ultra creative side of a person, or a zoned out, fast food consuming gamer....it all depends on the mood and emotions of a person I suppose. Alcohol seems to have just about the same effect on everyone, no matter how happy that person may be....and it certainly by no means makes anyone "creative". I don't know...different people may tell you different things, but im willing to bet that if they took a general concensus, weed would come out on top. It's a known fact alchohol has led to more death, violent outbreaks, misery and pain then any other drug you can find out there. That much I know is fact.

fact is, in my city alone they spend a quarter BILLION dollars each year to combat WEED.....can you believe this<<<
do people stop smoking it? .....no. Do people keep pushing to legalize it? ....every damn day. So why is the government so against the legalization of THC?....as soon as they figure out how to tax and regulate it....we'll see it in the 7-11 one day.

Ginny Jin
Alcohol does because it is more easily available and it would be impossible to prohibit now. Cannabis users are peaceful, some (not all) alcoholics are aggressive.

Kolawole
They are both very very good prescription for people who no more see any good reason for living. They belong to the living dead group.

Jack D
weed should be legal

Gordon B
If you do get a disease from drinking, at least you would have funded the treatment through the high taxes. Cannabis smokers, who have a problem have to be funded by other taxes, because the pay no tax on their habit. And that doesn't include the other criminality involved. Only alcoholics drink in the morning, but most cannabis uses, will skin up first thing, and are less productive in their work.

From a M/H perspective there is little between them, alcohol can cause permenant M/H problems, Cannabis can increase the incidence/onset of M/H problems in a person who is already predesposed to the condition, also both can act as triggers towards relapse.

It has been repeatedly shown that the smoking of cannabis has no lasting psychological effect, and causes no measurable impairment even when smoked repeatedly over long periods of time. Contrarily, alcohol has been repeatedly shown to cause long-term damage of several body systems, primarily the liver, as well as having lasting effects on brain chemistry. The cannabis user takes little toll on society, and protecting society is supposed to be the reason laws are made. Unfortunately, the government was thinking more along the lines of protecting wall-street special interests when they passed legislation against marijuana, in the face of the huge toll alcoholism reaps on society every day.

I find myself agreeing with some of your points.

The problem is, making alcohol illegal will never happen. The alcohol industry is too powerful. It provides many jobs. None of these things can be said about cannabis.

Personally, I don't think people need either of those substances. Mind altering substances are an assault on the brain.

Alcohol does far more damage. It is a major factor in over 50% of all crimes of violence; with similar statistics in domestic violence, child abuse, rape, etc. In terms of social cost the revenue from alcohol sales nowhere near reaches the expense created.
Add to that traffic accidents, days lossed at work, etc., and you have a seriously dangerouis drug. But it makes a lot of people a lot of money and they arte determined to keep it that way.

Pam H
I think alcohol is worse. I have never seen any one with mental health problems from smoking weed, if they have them the mental health issues were there to start with. Alcoholics, drunk drivers, domestic violence all lead me to believe alcohol is more destructive.

brummie emma
well i smoke and drink but me and myself aint got a mental problem lol. seriously i drink most nights sometimes gettin quite drunk i dont go round causin trouble or 'kickin' people 2 death thats just stupid morons my bf smokes weed all the time he dont have mental problems. i do agree that some people have reactions but not all with both drink and weed its just a small amount that do

Happy Murcia
In a recent BBC investigation it was found that alcohol is the 5th most dangerous drug with cannabis coming in at 11th,,I have been smoking virtually non stop for the last 27 years and have no mental issues that need resolving,,mental issues are always being rolled out as a reason for cannabis legislation but this is only the case if you already have issues,,I have read just about every paper there is to read on the subject and have found nothing to change my mind,,,there has only ever been 1 recorded death accredited to cannabis whilst over 40,000 to alcohol abuse and use,,,they say its for losers,,Hmm well I managed to retire some 21 years before retirement age and be very successful,,stereotyping eh,,,
