Am I going to get fired??
Find answers to your legal question.

Am I going to get fired??

The other day I made what I consider a small mistake at work. When my supervisors (I have 2) found out, one of them acted really annoyed and stressed out about it, rolling his eyes and rubbing his hair, etc. Later in the day him and my other supervisor were talking in the office with their door closed. Nobody said anything to me about the mistake, but the next day I apologized to my supervisor about it and told her I would fix it immediately. She said "No problem." Usually they like my work. The next day, one of them even gave me an overflow assignment and said it's because I'm "pretty much on top of things" as compared to my coworkers. Should I be worried? If it really was a big mistake, would they take me aside and talk to me about it and tell me I need to improve, etc?

I am a supervisor at my work and we don't fire people for one mistake unless it's HUGE or the person refuses to take responsibility for it. I don't know how big it was but if you fixed it and fessed up about it I doubt you have anything to worry about. Of course some supervisors are mean and don't need much of a reason. Keep your head up, you'll probably be ok.

A good supervisor will tell you what you need to do and be consistent. Be confident and focus on your job.

I would think that if they felt you needed fired, they would have acted immediately. I've never heard of someone stewing on it for a while and then letting you go. Also, in my experiences where I haven't been up to Par as far as their expectations, they've let me know right away so that I could fix the mistakes immediately. If you're uneasy just talk to them or one of them about it - make sure you're in the good so you don't stress yourself out...tell them you want to fix it and that you're sorry.

If they are giving you extra work you are probably ok, but it depends on the mistake... can't give you a very reliable answer without knowing more.

I think if this was the first time you have made a mistake at work, they will let it slide. However, if this has anything to do with a cash drawer not balancing....and all of a sudden you were able to make it balance, I would say you are done. They will not be able to trust you anymore if it has anything to do with money.

I doubt you will get fired that easily for something like that. Instead, people will give you a hard time at work to force you to resign. You will not be fired because when you are fired, they have to pay you money for unemployment, so they will probably try to urge you to resign. Just make sure you watch your back, and make sure you don't let these things get to you, because once it gets into your head, you're screwed.

I would want to know what kind of mistake it was? but i mean if they are still giving you jobs to preform then i would think that you would be perfectly safe

Simma down! Sounds like you are working too hard. Mistakes happen, no need to be paranoid about it.

You never can tell, but it sounds to me like maybe the annoyed supervisor may have been having a bad day already...and your mistake was just one more thing he had to deal with. I wouldn't stress about it. If it happens, it happens...but constantly worrying won't help you, so don't freak out. It's a waste of your energy to sweat about an assumed problem. Wait until it IS a problem.

If they were going to fire you they would have done that as soon as possible because its slow season right now so if they didnt want you you wouldn't be there anymore. In my job if your gonna get fired they let you kno immediately.

Sounds like they like you and your work, I quess they talked about it and decided the mistake was not as big of a loss as losing you.

It sounds to me like you are seeing things that aren't there because you're worried that your job may be on the line. You are seeing that they are talking behind closed doors, but they may not be talking about you! Just keep doing the best you can possibly do. If it was truly a small mistake, and the boss said "no problem" after you apologized...and days have passed by since then, I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Stress is horrible. It'll make you feel bad (emotionally and physically), and in my opinion it can make you think things are happening, when they aren't.

Good luck!!!

My question is how do you know the two supervisors were talking about you when the door was closed?
Ask for a meeting and tell them what you can do to prevent the mistake from ever happening again. Just come out and ask them where you stand.

Well, it depends mostly upon the depth and breadth of your mistake and how much it affected the company. They may need to convene a committee to discuss the matter for risk management purposes. Why don't you approach your supervisor again and just ask? You've already accepted responsibility and fixed the problem. You need to get this behind you or it will negatively affect your future work (right?) and prevent you from being a productive employee.

It really depends on what the mistake was, and also on how your supervisors feel is the best way to handle it.

If one supervisor said it wasn't a big deal, when the mistake has been fixed if you still feel like they are concerned about it, ask if you should have a brief discussion to go over what happened to make sure it doesn't happen in the future. I'd rather bring it up than have my boss do it.

If what you did was something like leave a confidential document out on your desk and someone saw it, that's easy to fix: put stuff up. But if you messed up a spreadsheet or shipped something wrong or something that was part of a known process then you probably want to see why you thought it was not a big deal and they did.

I tend to be cautious since I don't know your situation - at my job mistakes happen but we know what to look for and how to fix them and even the biggest mistakes can be fixed...

Good luck!

Yes, I think you are right...you have nothing to worry about at this point. We all make mistakes and if you are normally a good worker your supervisors will, or at least, should consider that when problems arise.
Actually if there is a problem, they must follow a "labor code" in dealing with your problem...1st is verbal warning...2nd is written waring with clearly stated way to correct the problem...3rd is termination if they want. However, you said they said nothing....so if I were you I would just forget about it and focus on your work...things will probably be fine.

Ask them, ask them what you can do to improve yourself.

chrispkreme333
You never even stated what you did wrong? You are leaving out a whole bunch...but, they can fire you for anything really!
