First of all, you are trying to mislead people when you say "an automatic rifle for self defence"

Automatic weapons are strictly regulated by the 1939 Firearms Act, and nearly impossible to obtain. This is permanent and not subject to expiration.

Secondly, you need to familiarize yourself with the U.S. Constitution, specifically Amendment II

Third, yes "making more guns availiable" (concealed carry permits) is proven to reduce crime.

The college decided not to allow permit-holding individuals to carry on campus. And we have paid a terrible price for this thoughtlessness. If one of those students or teachers who had a CCW permit was armed, tragedy could have been avoided or curtailed much earlier.

I live in Tennessee and most people I know have 5 or 6 guns. Some have as many as 100. They are NOT going to give up their guns. No mater what law you pass. Are you going to come here and kill all of then just to say you took all the guns? Are you willing to start a new civil war? Because that is what it will take to get our guns!!!!

but here,if you take away"the guns" you will only get the legal ones,therefore denying the legal members of the country the means to defend themselves from the criminals who would keep theirs....your abstract answer is absurd and would work only if there were some way(there isnt) to disarm everybody at once...wont happen...so the mantra of "lets get the guns off the streets" is just that....noise....I am glad you live somewhere that guns are illegal....good for you...I live where every thug over 10 has a "glock"(generic for pistol)...so you suggest I give up mine and leave my home and children open to attack?//.....go away you...your ideas stink

I would agree with you, except for one thing. There are so many guns already in the possession of criminals, that if you take away guns from the law-abiding people, then the only people with guns will be the criminals.

average response time for a cop to show up where i live (seattle area) is OVER AN HOUR. and just what is a cop, anyway, but a man (or woman) with a gun coming to your rescue?? if you need a man with a gun to rescue you from the bad guy, why wait?

i do believe, however, firearms training should be mandatory as a prerequisite for purchasing one. not just on how to use, but when, as well.

oh, and by the way, contrary to the impression hollywood gives, it has been illegal for quite some time now for the average american to own an automatic (rat-a-tat-tat) weapon.

It's not about relaxing gun laws. It's about giving law abiding citizens the right and freedom to carry a gun to protect themselves. I agree there is no need for an automatic rifle, and if memory serves me correctly, they are illegal. The problem is that those that want to break the law will always find a way to get a gun.

If there were law abiding students that were carrying guns, I am absolutely convinced that the death toll would not have been what is was. There may have still be some casualties, but those that were using guns for protection could have used the gun on the shooter, and either incapacitated him or killed him to keep him from killing someone else.

32 people died because the only means to defend themselves was jumping out a window and a locked door with some desks thrown behind it, which the gunman shot through and injured and killed several people. Now imagine if just one had a gun and shot back through the door. More of the victims could have had a fighting chance

I agree with the laws ... there is no tests to speak of just the fact that you cant have any felonies or convicted of domestic violence..as far as the the automatic weapons go only way you are aloud to have them is to have a ffl and they are pricey. That is for full auto... now for semi auto you can buy, there not really for defense just for fun mostly. The hand gun would be mostly for defense. And as far as more people having guns. Do you think that Cho Seung-Hui from VA. TECH. Would have been able to kill 33 people if just one person had gun? Not saying every one get a gun just the ones who are not crazy

Having guns won't make you just go out and start killing, you still have to have the nerve to do it and in the resent case involving the college that was an isolated case. On the other hand most of the killings in American city are drug related, so we can not turn a blind eye to the causes that make people resort to violence even in isolated cases.

I have a concealed carry permit. I carry everywhere I go. Why, because my wife and children deserve all the protection I can give them in case we encounter one the these cowards on a rampage. I have no desire to take a human life, but if some sissy forces my hand and puts my families life in danger....well let's just say there will be one less thug in the world. If that offends somebody's sense of right and wrong, too bad.

From outside the US, your gun laws look clinically insane. Mass availability and ease of purchase of firearms, the political influence of the gun lobby, and the symbolism suggests that the logical end point is to make carrying firearms compulsory. Let you slug it out among yourselves.

Of course the Swiss do this effectively and with great results, but then again they are just Germans with altitude, and so they REALLY know how to organise a society.

They take every citizen from the age of 16, gave them military training (including firearms training) every the year for their whole adult life, and made it a legal responsibility to keep an Assault Rifle in every house.

You'd probably end up with a society as polite and crime free as Switzerland.

To carry a firearm is and should be a personal choice.

I have a concealed carry permit and like my credit card. I don't leave home without it.

I also happen to be a retired Police Officer and once was on a Army Pistol Team.
