If the U.S. can torture anyone that the President thinks is a bad guy, but no other nation can be allowed to torture their "bad guys", who might well be our "good guys". Or, if the U.S. can continue to develop new nuclear weapons and build new nuclear power plants while forbidding other nations from doing the same. What's that called? American exceptionalism?...Might makes right? When I was in junior high I picked on a kid that was smaller than myself for a few days. One day he turned to me and said, "You know, you wouldn't beat up on me if I were bigger than you." My first response was, "Well, Duh. Of course I pick on you because you're smaller and I'm bigger. If you were bigger and I were smaller you could beat me up and probably would. Since then I've thought about it and don't think it's ever a good idea for anyone to beat up on anyone else. Yes, there are rare occasions when physical force must be used to restrain or subdue, but that kind of force should always be a last resort and never a first choice. Are the people in charge of the most powerful and deadly military force on the planet really dumber than I was at 13?

terry t.: 19 Saudi highjackers could not have pulled off 9/11. We'll probably never know precisesly who did or why. I won't go into details here. There are too many good movies and books on the subject. Also, say we accept that the "terrorists" did the job. How long do we make them pay for it? How many Iraqi and Afghan civilians have died for our 3,000? 500,000? 1,000,000? What's the exchange rate?

If the Iranian government truly has probable cause to believe that the journalist they have jailed has information about a pending attack on Iranian Citizens by terrorist forces, then I would say yes, they should 'waterboard' her.
However, I hope you would agree that her case is considerably different than that of the people the United States 'waterboarded', who were largely taken into custody after they were caught actively trying to kill Americans.
It's not a case of who is bigger or stronger; it's a case of weighing the value of the lives of your nation's citizens against the rights of the people you believe are involved in trying to kill those citizens. |
