An employer owes me money and wont return my calls, what can I legally do?

Ive been laid off for a couple months now. Ive been working with an old neighbor under the table a couple days a week for a couple bucks here and there. Its been a while since he's given me any kind of money, and right now, the smallest amount of money is a big help. Last Friday he said he would need me for the day, and I told him when we were even on pay he owed me, Id come back to work with him. As it stands right now, he owes me $500. I haven't heard back from him since last friday. This guy is screwin me, and he knows it, since he offered me some part time work when I got laid off from my real job. Im not the kinda person to threaten, plus I have to many guns in the house to threaten, plus hes friends with to many cops. What are my options here? I was thinking about going and sitting on his steps, but hes a hothead that carries, and dont want to get shot over $500. What can I do here? Thanks.

Under the table means he's not an employer. He's a guy who's paying you under the table. All you realistically have is court.

Take him to small claims court and sue him.

You wont be able to do anything at all.

You cant take him to court cos you were doing this paid work on the side and not paying taxes so you have actually commited a crime
(Well thats how it works in the UK)

Also did you have a contract??

Get a hold of the department of labor in the state you live in. They can assist you in bringing him to court if need be.
