I believe that animals should be given the same rights and respect as humans. I wouldn't subject a human being to pain or suffering so why I would I subject an animal to pain?
I haven't eaten animals for 16 years, I don't buy or wear leather and I make a conscious decision to not buy products that I know are tested on animals.
I don't agree with medical testing on animals as there are a whole host of scientifically validated alternatives (just look up the John Hopkins Centre and ECVAM). I have to say that I hate people who turn to me and say "How can you not agree with testing on animals for the benefit of finding cures for HIV/Cancer etc etc?" I tell them "How can you support testing a drug on an animal when it may not harm the animal but may have fatal side effects when given to humans?"
The problem with animal testing is this:
All drugs are tested on animals first. If the drug passes the animal tests then it is taken to phase I clinical trials. If the drugs fails animal tests it is still taken to phase I clinical trials. So whether the drug is passed as safe or not in animals, it is still essentially given to humans at some point down the line. Would you be prepared to give your child a drug that had killed several hundred animals but scientists decided to pass it as safe anyway?
That aside, this doesn't mean to say that I am supporter of extremist groups such as ALF (Animal Liberation Front). Most animal lovers and vegetarians vehemently despise such groups. |

There are no such things as 'animal rights' only human responsibilities. |

They have the right to be treated humanely, not cruelly. But I'm not against eating them or anything like that. |

Animals should not be caused unnecessary, gratuitous pain. But we should use them (and eat them), in each case wisely and with due respect for what nature has provided us. |

I agree with more or less all the other responders.
Animals are animals. No inherant rights, simply human responsibilities.
Do not cause undue suffering or harm.
Ok to eat them.
Ok to use for research (humainly) |

We can eat them just not hurt them for no reason. |

Generally people recognize cruelty when they see it. Slaughtering a cow for butchering = not cruel. Cutting its leg off to watch it limp = cruel.
Swatting a fly = not cruel. Pulling its wings off = cruel.
See what I'm getting at. |

Just depends on how deep animal rights laws go. You shouldn't abuse animals. That is really the only right I think we need to give them. Lest we forget. We eat them! So too many rights would be contrary to our very survival. Before you say just eat vegies. Tell that to the poor and starving in the world. |

i think animal cruelty is unnecessary and its not fair to the animals. i strongly believe the people who take part in animal cruelty NEED to be prosecuted. I was watching animal police and someone dumped acid on their dog and the dog had over 45% of its body burned! thats ridiculous!
however, i will NEVER pass up a nice juicy steak! |

What about it ? You need to be more specific. The rats, mice, snakes have no rights whatsoever to get into my house and scare me to death. And eat my food and chew on my clothes. The chickens have no rights when it comes to "sacrifice" them for the dinner table. Neither do the turkeys when Thanksgiving day comes.
Fishes are the most abused animals on the planet.
Wild and domestic animals should not be abused and killed just because...for fun.We humans should respect nature. Or nature will come after us ...in the form of wild fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, floodings, earthquakes etc.etc. Mother earth will be very angry at us for abusing its creatures and failing to protect them. |

I agree with Bill H - animals are food and those animals who are in direct competition with us for food, should be shot dead on sight - rats, mice, squirrels etc. Oh yeah, not forgetting birds such as crows, magpies etc. Vermin and yes pigeons, we should eat more of them, less crap on our streets here in London.
One final - the fox is a vermin - kill one today. . . . |

Animals have no rights when they are in season and I have my trusty 12 gauge...
Anyone who is against hunting is ill-informed, uneducated and needs to go to a wildlife biology class.
That being said, animals should not be tortured or hurt just to torture or hurt. But I have no problem shooting them while hunting them and eating them. |

Many people who support "Animal Rights" (being against animal cruelty is something different) believe in evolution.
If you believe in evolution, you believe in two things: (a) Survival of the fittest, and (b) We evolved from animals (monkeys).
If we are a higher evolved species who came from monkeys, then we have evolved into the dominant species.
That means animal rights do not exist. That means we're all animals and if we (humans) decide to eat certain animals or merely kill them for sport, that should be our right as the most highly evolved species.
I, however, believe that God Created the Heavens and the Earth, and Created people to rule over the earth (Genesis 1). I don't believe animals have inherant rights, but that we should not be cruel to animals. It is okay to kill them for food, or when they are a nuisance, etc. |

Top of the food chain...If given an opportunity, there are a few that would eat us in a heart beat...Outside of that....as for animals that "we" do not eat....example...cats, dogs, or pets in general that are not for food purposes....cruelty is absolutely without a doubt wrong. I think that crimes against animals...should be punishable to the fullest degree of the abuse....especially for those that find it amusing to torture animals to get their jolly's.....just my animal lovin opinion! Now please pass the steak! :) |

I am absolutely against hunting. There is no place for hunting in the 21st century. I also believe there needs to be tougher laws against animal abuse. |
